Evzones at the Greek Parliament Building in front of Syntagma Square in Athens. Two Evzones Guards flank the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Dedicated on National Independence Day in 1932, the Tomb represents a dying Greek warrior and bears an inscription from Pericles's famous funeral speech.
The Evzones are dressed in traditional Greek uniform worn by the mountain fighters in the War of Independence.
The famous boots worn by the guards (tsarouchi) are a leather clog which has 60 nails studded in to the soles so the Evzones dont slip. The skirt/kilt is called a fustanella in Greek, there are 400 pleats in each one which represent the 400 years of Turkish occupation.
