Due to the expense of mailing these, I will not be sending any china overseas. :(
Both of my Polish grandparents lived through Nazi Germany.
My grandpa used to tell stories about the war and one of them was about working in the china factory, where after they were done eating they would just toss the plates out the window because they were worthless during the wartime.
To me this story is a beautiful representation of the destructive forces at work during that time period, and i would love to capture it in my own art.
We have a set of fine china given to us by my grandparents for our wedding, and we don't host parties at all, we're just not that kind of people. we've hung on to the dishes for going on ten years and i've decided this is how best to get rid of them.
If you would like to receive a (most probably broken or chipped) piece of our wedding gift, please RSVP with the promise you will return the favor by sending back a piece of your own artwork to my grandparents, who hang on to life by thinner threads as the years pass by. These people truly are survivors.

not sure what year, but i can find out.
(i'm really bad with dates and times -
i always have to ask amanda what my age is!!)
@sue: my grandma loves "pretty" things.
she went to hawaii once and really enjoyed it!
flowers, etc.
my grandpa loves all things tool related!
i think it stems from his time in germany,
being a hard worker was a way to ensure one's survival.
the postage is an awful lot, so i may send out one per week, but i'll keep tabs on everyone who has RSVP'd and make sure to get them their dishes!
so far i have pamela, laura, and sue!
Superhero, I can respect that, a lovely tribute to your grandparents. I may save my dish or pieces and send it back to your daughter one day.
laura, i appreciate your second-thinking for me, but both my wife and i agree that this is a great way to artistically represent the destruction of so much beauty and art through the tides of war in europe during the first half of the 20th century.
and i love my grandparents dearly, if this is a way to get people interested in sending them a piece of art before they are gone, it is well worth it to me. ;-)
i'll send you out something as soon as we get more stamps!
(tomorrow probably)
i may do them naked, but i'm thinking about doing paper mache-ish over them like i've been doing with my information container series. i'll sleep on it!
