I would like to ask whether the mail artists organising a mail art project usually send a reply to the artist who takes part in the project? Is their reply a mail art, a simple e-mail or no reply at all. Is there a documentation? What is your experience so far?

Perhaps you can look at the Bamboo project from IUOMA - member Sandra Simone Schmidt, Freiburg in  Germany. She made a very good job with a small, but propper Exhibition in my opinion. A well-done 'Call for Artists', an permanent Online-Exhibition of all postcards, a poster and a little booklet or brochure sent to every artist. She wrote an E-Mail for each project phase, after the arrival and when she sent the poster and the brochure. Between these different phases she kept the participants informed by E-Mail and on her project site.Very good arranged, organized and executed, a friendly and silent atmosphere.

I have organized several Mail Art projects. I usually start a blog for each and scan and post the images as I receive them. I don't have the financial resources to create and mail out catalogs to participants but will state that documentation will be on-line. The only time that I couldn't do on-line documentation was when I did the 3rd annual Skull Appreciation Day Mail Art call and the work went directly to the exhibition venue and never was in my hands. I did get a couple of photos of the exhibit installed and posted those to the blog. If participants give their e-mail address I send them notice when I post their work on the designated blog. I've participated in Mail Art projects sponsored by governments, or localities, where I did receive physical catalogs or documentation. That was very nice, but only happened because there were budgets to do it. I hope this is helpful. It takes a lot of diligence to document a project, that's for sure.
