definitely the 80s - one recession blends into another after a while - my first experience seeing food distributed free to the general populace - sure it has happened before but it was one of those "it can't happen here moments" - can't remember who the people on the trucks were but there was publicity about that program. funny what a video of breaking bottles can conjure up. thnx again Strelnikov

I believe that 'cheese' has a 100 year+ shelf life.    You are correct, MREs are much better.

damn, that cheese goes back a long way. the stuff i saw was Reagan era - looked the same - maybe leftover from the 50s

oh yeah, i am serious. in one of the bad recessions they just went into neighborhoods and passed out blocks of that processed cheese. i think the mres are a big advancement in prepared food

They used to put a form of this stuff in the field rations back when I was in the service, actually not too bad with the government crackers.
