RECEIVED:Textural-Ripped Collage from Imelda Wubben (The Hague, Netherlands)

Mail-art by IUOMA member Imelda Wubben (The Hague, Netherlands)

June 16, 2011 - Imelda Wubben is an accomplished collage artist. I was thrilled to receive the mail-art above from her for our first exchange. This is a large postcard-size piece that was enclosed in an envelope. The means of production is called Old School by some: Glue, paper, and scissors.

Imelda offered a key to this work with a note she included: "A face in the eye or an eye in the face?" I like word substitutions, and it points to expressionist-surrealist eyes and faces in the collage.

Each section is meticulously placed. Imelda tends to use the ripped paper technique, which seems to be fairly popular in that part of Europe. The rips are very precise and add to the texture of the collage. The rectangular pieces have beautiful, subtle colors and are slightly rough when you run your fingers over them. Imelda is contributing to the Asemics 16 Project. Her exploration of symbols is reflected in this collage. Here's the envelope:

Notice Imelda keeps Ruud Janssen's Fluxus word ZALOP moving through the world. She also uses a map on the reverse side. I always like the use of maps in mail-art:

Collage plays a big role in mail-art, and I am very partial to it. So it's great to make friends with a talented artist working in this area. I look forward to many more exchanges with Imelda Wubben as well as following her asemic work. Many thanks, Imelda!
