Received: Karen Champlin's Red Asemic Mail-Art Series (Chicago, Illinois, USA)

Mail-art by IUOMA member Karen Champlin (Chicago, Illinois, USA)

January 17, 2011 - Karen Champlin has done a stunning new series of postcard-size asemic letters with stamp images, and I was very pleased to receive this piece. Many in the mail-art network are familiar with her distinctive assemblages and visual poetry. Before the holidays, she told me of her intention to explore asemic writing by creating a set of symbols, something she has been doing since childhood and is now exploring in her art. This new series also incorporates her talent for using overlaying to create textures. The background is very much reliant on bits and pieces of language in different fonts. She included a nice note:

As always, she reminds me it's time to send her something. Karen has always been an advocate for enjoying vispo, which sometimes can become very theoretical and abstract. This is certainly a piece you can appreciate for its beauty alone. I've been a Karen Champlin fan for a long time and marvel at her ability to "make it new" and always move in new directions. Thanks, Karen!

I've seen this card on Karen's blog, it's nice work. I like the way she pushes you to send her something, way to go!
