Cover of TLP (Tacky Little Pamphlet) by IUOMA members Rebecca Guyver (Suffolk, UK) and Carina Granlund (Petsmo, Finland)
May 29, 2015 - The recent collaborative “doodle” concept, created by Diane Keys (Illinois, USA), has created a bit of a sensation in the Eternal Network. A number of these doodle pieces have found their way online and have proven to be popular.
Always the over-achiever, Rebecca Guyver is producing outstanding doodle collabs. She has developed a colorizing technique that makes them look spectacular! I am immensely fortunate that she sent me TWO amazing new TLPs (Tacky Little Pamphlets) bursting with FAB work. Of course I will share them with you. I will document them in two entries. This first TLP is the result of a collaboration between Rebecca and Carina Granlund of Finland.
Rebecca Guyver calls these pieces “doodle therapy,” but I contend they have evolved into comics. Because the subject never strays far from DKult, I am calling them D-Komix.
You can click to enlarge. Carina Granlund is a FAB illustrator with a love for comics. This project clearly gave her an opportunity to shine.
Because I am absolutely gushing over Carina Granlund’s contributions, do not – in any way – infer that I find Rebecca Guyver’s contributions lacking. This TLP, I believe, succeeds splendidly due to the wonderful blending of the talents of the two artists. They complement each other. I recognize some of the images Rebecca created, and they are foundational to the piece.
Those colors are popping!
I like these pages (above) especially.
I also call them comics because I think I spot the kernel of a narrative, not always linear or logical, but a story emerging.
Excellent back cover (above)! She also included this card in the mailing:
And the new DKULT(UK) stamp! Destined to be a classic:
Deepest thanks and congratulations to Rebecca Guyver and Carina Granlund. Stay tuned for Part II and another totally FAB TLP!
Comment
Glad you found it, Carina.
I believe it's worth mentioning again that the combined talents of Careena and Le Becca produce stunning results here. Others think so as well, obviously. This is a fruitful collab, indeed. I am very happy to have one of the TLPs. You two really ought to think about doing a graphic novel or comics or something.
I will soon be posting the second TLP in the series. Unfortunately, Carina does not contribute but some other IUOMA luminaries do, along w./ Figgy Pop.
And again, the TLP (Tacky Little Pamphlet) is a form that seems to be unique to mail art. With help, I have been able to trace the origins back to Wild Billy Haddock in the 1970s. (Haddock is still active today; I see his work posted online anyway.) Hopefully, that's reliable. John M. Bennett is one of the great practitioners of the TLP today. There is a certain pattern to the folding if you are trying to be 100% faithful, as I understand it.
Thank you, DVS! Rebecca has become a good friend, and it's always fun to work with her. "Doodle Therapy" is an intriguing subject and I hope people take it to heart... D-Komix is great!
