oh - the whole earth catalog was popular, but not much to look at. I thought TW might know about it because of the content. the much older things are more interesting to look at

I'm looking forward to seeing a new version of an almanac. Does anyone remember the "Last Whole Earth Catalog"? That was built on the almanac concept, I think, and had an entire novel inset inside the edition.

I wish I could get my hands on the stash my grandma' used to read. I was too young to know. I think they tossed them and it's too late now. Real treasures for mail art I am sure ;-(

I'm reading "Tess of the D'Ubervilles" right now - Hardy is in the air these days for no reason I can explain. Wouldn't you know, while this discussion of Marie's work was going on, I found a reference to the Almanac Tess's family was reading. They were farmers and the Almanac talked about crop cycles discussed in the Almanac and how Tess was afraid to read it because of "gypsy fortunes" that were included and she did not want to give in to being superstitions. So the Almanacs were definitely staples with the 19th century rural families.
