Great story V. Marque!! All that name changing did not give you gender confusion  from what it seems I hope. I think being different can be harder, but in the long run makes for more interesting and strong people. My daughter has a very unusual name and she might curse us for it through her teenage years, but when she gets older like it because you always stand out. Thanks for sharing this story-=you were right--I had to look!

Bonjour! Theresa: 'Mog' is English slang for a cat. I don't know where it comes from. There is a famous series of children's books about Mog the Cat: I used to read them to my kids.

Diane: it's NOT just cats that have these problems. I do. IF YOU ARE OF A SENSITIVE DISPOSITION LOOK AWAY NOW. Welcome back: I knew you would be curious!

I was christened Valentine. Valentine was my mother's maiden name. Her father's name was Valentino -- he was Spanish. (My children are called Susannah Valentine and David valentine -- an attempt to keep the name going. We can trace the family back 13 generations to 1625)

It wasn't easy growing up in a working class town with a name like Valentine when everyone else was called Tom, Dick & Harry (or John, Paul & George -- but not Ringo). It got shortened to Val. Professionally for a while I was known as VM Herman. Then I became Valentine Herman. And all went well until...

.... I moved to Holland. Val means fall, in Dutch. Ha! But I could live with that, and all went well again until...

...I moved to France, only to find out that Valentine (with an e) was a female name) and Valentin (without an e) was a male name. Easy, you might think -- just drop the last e. But French bureaucracy is such that it ain't that easy. (French bureaucracy is such that NOTHING is easy) so I became Mark.

Now I am sort of known as Val, Valentine, Mark, Valentine Mark, or to all of you in IUOMA That Anglo French Idiot Who Writes Long and Incomprehsible Messages.

No wonder Trouble has, well, troubles.

Also, JE Sweefoo (get it?)

The End

You are so funny Val. Do you think these misdiagnosed cats suffer gender confusion as a result? It's weird how knowing the sex determines how we view them as pretty or handsome. I'm still having a hard time seeing the kitten as anything but a rough and tumble boy, so I told my daughter she's a tomboy. I'm actually comforted to know that even a vet can't always tell the sex. It seems like it should be obvious but it isn't.  Our cat's name is July, so it's actually a better girl name than boy name. a gender blind doc? Yes, that could be tricky

Take a walk on the Wild Side (of the cemetry), Lou.

Circa 1980 we bought a neutered one-time male kitten in Belgium. 14 years later we discoverd that he had originally been a she and 'Tom' became 'Thomasina'. (By that time the kids had grown up and this change to the mog was not a problem.)

Last year we were adopted by a Siamese cat that we called 'Trouble', who certainly lives up to his name. When we realised that he had finally moved in with us we took him to a vet to get some shots, and a passport (don't ask). The vet didn't couldn't tell: a) if Trouble was a he or a she, or b) how old (s)he was.

I subsequently decided that Trouble was a 4-year old male cat.

I hope that the vet is more confident about the age and sex of any partner that he might have.

It's a he, but he didn't seem to mind really. It's so hard to tell the sex. We just figured out that our 3 month old kitty that we thought was a he is a she. Hard to regroup after that.  So the pets are going to the ball at least. I hope Snooky and Potion get along
