Literature and Art

For people who read and enjoy good literature--literary classics or literary contemporary and like to make art about it.  Using literature as inspiration for our art.  Also for people interested in writing letters about literature.  This is also a meeting place for The New Arzamas Literary Circle, which is dedicated to writing creative letters on literary topics.

LITERATURE and ART

TOP:

Handmade Ezra Pound (Ezruckus Poundamonium) paper doll for a series of skits in which E.P is the main star. --Theresa Williams

MIDDLE:

Automatic writing by Nancy Bell Scott.

BOTTOM:

One of a set of cards made while contemplating the poet Theodore Roethke.  On November 12, Roethke suffered the first of what was to be many mental episodes.  It happened in the cold Michigan woods, and he described the experience as having a "secret" revealed to him, which he said was the secret of "Nijinsky."  Nijinsky was a famous ballet dancer who was institutionalized for schizophrenia.  With your permission, I'd like to post your artwork at my blog:  The Letter Project.   I'm also looking for letters about literature and creativity.  All works from the blog have gone through the postal system.

The comments following your Talking Writing piece showed that I wasn't the only one moved by it.  It was also simply a great choice of topic -- how many teachers even think of such things anymore, let alone have their students try out the experience?  And you're exactly right that mail-art is important for the "gathering and using of [library, book, mail] artifacts in a meaningful way."  I'm loving it, and have been going through boxes (many boxes!) of just such artifacts I've been collecting for years, ever since I became part of the antiquing world, which was 1994.  Every now and then someone would suggest I get rid of the stuff since it turned out I was using only a small amount of it in my regular collages.  I wanted to use it, but it seemed that was becoming cliche because of the scrapbooking trend and the copying of the style of people like Nick Bantock.  But I never seriously considered getting rid of any of it, because I love it and sensed someday the right format for it would capture my attention.  And as we see, it has.

In one box the other night I found a copy of a letter I wrote to a friend about 5 years ago, and was amazed to see this paragraph in it:  "Linda.  I found a letter you wrote me the other day.  I mean you didn't write it the other day, I found it the other day.  You wrote it in Dec. 2004, and it's such a good letter, and you stuck stuff to it.  You must know about mail art, yes?  Have you ever gotten into it?  You're a natural.  I'm getting sorely tempted myself."  I don't even remember tossing around the term that recently.

Just kidding -- the name is so similar to De Villo.

Oh superhero, you can google too.  It's a shame when they misspell the author's name on the cover, though.
