FREE ART: July is Urban Exploration Month

In the month of July, we are calling for your view of the world through Observational Art.

Featured artist for the month is my good friend Erni Bär out in Hamburg, Germany who has been doing a lot of work with what he calls "Urban Exploration."

Off Scene

The so-called Off Scene not only means actual three-dimensional room where the fine arts, music, literatur, theatre, movies and all their crossovers can take place but exists and reveals itself as virtual space of possibilities within ourselves. Off can be defined as a life concept finally giving birth to an artistic output of aesthetic and political as well as social implications responding to societal situations. Being playground for radical outsiders Off attracts people who have no intentions to submit themselves to whatsoever economy or satisfy official art history with their output. Fundamental principle is a categorical freedom of contents and form, bound only to personal believes.
Of course the efficiency of such a view remains to be seen.
When there's no free space in one's head no trendy loft or ground floor gallery will do any good. Off means more than a little roaming the citiy's in-scenes after a week of 9 to 5 , for Off means ignoring what's regarded as safe and secure. Whoever cuts across that threshold boldly turns her- or himself over to the vague and undefined.
Off is no niche but more a rather total living space, equipping the participants with more than a certain „aura“. To be off means ignoring all intentions of functionaries as there are curators, collectors, and assorters of culture saying goodbye to official history of culture and art. As side effect one blocks up all monopolization couvetousness of the mainstream.
The point is not to reach the art market but to erase traditional believes of how art is to be defined as well as all homespun opinions on that and finally start from the beginning anew vitalizing the result of the whole process. Dada, Fluxus, Beat Generation, Flower Power, happening, poetry, movies, video and performance, desperation und denial — all are at home in the Off Scene.
Off was and still is a breakup into space-time containing the unexpected wealth of an alternative life. Off ist a cornucopia of expressive forms only to be found beyond all cultural bondage of governmental management of culture and society.
