Event Description

Edgar Allan Poe-stal

A Mail Art Competition for The Big Read
by the Yuba-Sutter Regional Arts Council

The Rules

Anyone can enter.  There is no cost other than the postage on your piece.  (Please understand that we can’t accept Postage Due items.)

No artwork will be returned or, ahem, considered purloined. The Arts Council reserves the right to display (physically and electronically), give, donate, award, auction or otherwise sell your entered artwork to benefit the arts in the Yuba Sutter region it serves. You may retain and use scans/photos of your entry.

One work will be deemed “Best in Poe” and the artist awarded US $100 and a certificate.

  • All entries will be displayed in an online gallery viewable by anyone worldwide and will serve as artist documentation.
  • Selected pieces will be displayed in public spaces in Yuba and Sutter       Counties, California, USA during The Big Read.

Theme      Your mail art piece must be inspired by the life, themes or work of Edgar Allan Poe and you must tell us how/why.

Entry Procedures      The entry process is two-fold:

(1) send an email to poe@yubasutterarts.org with “Mail Art” in the Subject Line. In the email provide your name and your city/town, state/province and country. We’ll use that email to contact you if you are the winner.

Also in the email, in 50 words or less, give us the title of your work, if any, and (mandatory) what work by Poe inspired your piece and what about that story or poem spoke to you.  Entries without this element will not be considered.

(2) mail us your art piece.  All work must be postally mailed without an envelope; i.e. the postage has to be ON the actual piece of art.  (It’s a Mail Art Competition, after all!)  Not to be redundant, but: no email or fax submissions will be accepted.

Mail with postmark no later than Oct. 10, 2012 to:

Edgar Allan Poe-stal

 P.O. Box 2504

Marysville, CA 95901 USA

Note:  You may enter more than one piece of art.  You may include description of your entries in the same entry email
but each art piece must be postally mailed separately.

For Artwork Requirements, complete information and contact organization: Yuba Sutter Arts Council

Deadline  Entries must be postmarked no later than October 10, 2012, regardless of which side of the International Date Line you’re on.  We’ll start displaying pieces online on the 12th, in the order  received.

Thanks Claire-Cleo. I wasn't quite sure. It is hard to tell about the spirit in which things are said sometimes.

I hope that some of you will take up the Poe challenge. Be sure to post your entry here too.

Looking forward to seeing some Poe-art.

lol! (please don't take it wrong, people are joking - just having fun/being sarcastic. but maybe you are too? %_^ It's always hard to tell the spirit in which comments are intended in virtual communication of crs...)

I suppose you could send a brick as long as it had artwork inspired by some work of Poe. However, the postage would probably limit you to one submission. :)

I'm a little baffled by the responses to this contest. I'm very new to Mail Art, and I wasn't expecting all the negative comments.

Look, I just want the mail-artists to do what any mail-artists know they should do: Mail a brick to the Stutter Arts Council.

And then the eminent judge can go around and select the prize-winning brick and mail everyone $100 in Food Stamps, postage due.

in case you're not being sarcastic (who, me?!): "rolling on the floor laughing"

Really!

WTF is rotfl, Claire. You have an opinion? Go ahead and send a brick to the Stutter Art Council for the $100.

Edgar A. Poe was a drug addict who wrote about having sex with corpses. I am completely offended someone that there would be a mail-art show glamorizing that guy.

@DVS: rotfl!!

Comment by De Villo Sloan on September 28, 2012 at 1:53am

Is there a limit to the number of bricks I can send?

Comment by De Villo Sloan on September 28, 2012 at 1:48am

Oh,federal money.Could you just send me Food Stamps instead of money for the prize? I'll donate my brick to the Smithsonian.

BTW, why is the federal government auctioning off mail-art?
