AFTER RAY JOHNSON MAIL ART PROJECT – INSTRUCTIONS/FAQ

HELLO!

This is an invitation to participate in a mail art project dedicated to Ray Johnson, the founding father of mail art.

ALTER OR ADD TO THE ENCLOSED COLLAGE

I will send you a small beginning of a collage on a sheet of basic (copy) paper. Add (to) and return it to me. You can collage it, paint or draw it, crumple it, shred it and start over, add text or poetry, stamps or fabric, ink or food stains, add handwritten materials, add new or old materials, etc. and recreate/edit/redesign it any way you want to. Then, return it to me.

ARE THERE ANY RULES

Nope! Be maximalist or minimalist in your decision-making. Make a choice that is discordant, harmonious, monochrome, colorful, contemporary, antique, etc. The choice is yours! That is the beauty of mail art.

CAN PARTICIPANTS/ARTIST SUBMIT A DIGITAL IMAGE?

No. I ask that if you agree to participate, sending the artwork through the postal system is critical. Please send it back to me using the USPS. This is a physical mail art correspondence project. Thank you!

NEXT STEPS

Once you alter it, return it to me at the address enclosed. I will photograph the work and post on IG (@ rebatra). Send me your IG handle if you want to include an attribution.  Here is my mailing address:
