Avant‑Garde Festival – Meeting at the Buchholz Oberscheid Kulturtage 2026

The Kulturtag Oberscheid 2026 opened with a striking gesture of nature. A generous summer rain swept across the orchard meadow, turning the first hours of the festival into a gentle adventure for those who had chosen to camp among the trees. Many embraced the moment with calm delight, while others found a peaceful resting place inside the surrounding buildings, where the warm spirit of the gathering was already palpable. As the rain eased and the sky brightened, the atmosphere shifted into a sense of shared anticipation, welcoming a weekend devoted to sound, art and community.

Throughout the festival, an exceptional arc of experimental music unfolded — a hallmark of Oberscheid and one of the reasons it is cherished by artists and audiences alike. The garden resonated with the luminous timbre of well‑tuned organs, creating a field of gentle vibration that seemed to breathe with the landscape. Overtone singing traced delicate lines between earth and sky, while the theremin added its characteristic gliding presence, moving like a ribbon of light through the air. Bass and viola contributed warm, grounded tonalities, weaving a foundation for original texts drawn from lyric poetry, prose and spoken word. These elements came together with excellent songwriting to form a richly textured sonic tapestry, one in which instruments, voices and ideas met in a spirit of exploration rather than separation.

Visual and performative art complemented the musical program with equal vitality. Paintings, photographs, installations and live performances were presented in a curatorial rhythm that encouraged visitors to move freely between garden, house and meadow. Art was not simply displayed; it was encountered, shared and allowed to unfold in its own time. Among the guests were several Mail Art and Postkunst artists who used the festival as a place of reunion and inspiration. One of them, Rainer Wieczorek from Berlin, contributed once again to the program with his distinctive artistic voice and his ongoing commitment to artistic democracy and peace, enriching the festival with both presence and perspective. Asma Ounine and Lars Schumacher continued their inspired collaboration from the previous year with the Berlin artist, bringing together creators whose work resonates across disciplines and regions.

The wide reach of the Kulturtag was evident throughout the weekend. Car plates revealed visitors from Niedersachsen, Nordrhein‑Westfalen, Hessen, Rheinland‑Pfalz and even the Netherlands, reflecting the remarkable draw this festival has developed over the years. The willingness of so many to travel into the Westerwald speaks to the unique character of Oberscheid — a place where people from diverse regions come together, forming new connections and renewing familiar ones.

The atmosphere remained warm, attentive and full of appreciation from the first moment to the last. Musicians, artists, guests and hosts moved in a harmonious interplay that gave the Kulturtag its distinctive charm and creative vitality. As the weekend drew to a close, many spoke with joyful anticipation about returning next year. This sense of forward-looking enthusiasm may be the most telling sign of the festival’s strength: it does not simply leave impressions; it inspires a desire to come back, to continue, and to be part of its unfolding story.

The 18th Kulturtag Oberscheid unfolded over three vibrant days, presenting a richly curated constellation of musical, literary and visual contributions. The festival opened on Friday with an inviting Open Stage, offering space for spontaneous encounters and artistic exchange. As the evening progressed, The Silver Roarings set an expressive tone, followed by the energetic presence of the Blue George Bluesband. Later performances by achrolber and WAM carried the night into a realm of improvisation and experimental sound, establishing the festival’s signature atmosphere of openness and creative exploration.

Saturday expanded this arc with a diverse sequence of performances. The morning began with HAU, followed by the trio Alexius – Radzetskyi – Grankin, whose interplay of musical textures resonated across the garden. Throughout the day, literary and performative works by Jeannette Abée and Marina Linares enriched the program, offering moments of reflection and poetic presence. Afternoon performances included Kohmann/Zöllner/Weiß, the freely improvising ensemble Polyfolie, and the duo Holtbernd & Stöcker, each contributing their own artistic language. The Improbable Trio added a distinctive chamber‑like intensity, while Cumulonimbus and Phalanx shaped the evening with expansive soundscapes. The night concluded with WAM and others, bringing together musicians in a shared improvisational finale.

Sunday continued this rhythm of discovery. The day opened with gentle musical encounters leading into IMPROCITY, whose improvisational approach reflected the festival’s spirit of artistic freedom. Once again, Jeannette Abée and Marina Linares offered readings and performances that bridged literature, movement and image. The afternoon featured About Aphrodite, followed by Subversity and Doppelplus, each presenting their own experimental approach to sound and structure. The festival concluded with the Oberscheid Allstars, a collective happening that brought artists and visitors together in a celebratory closing gesture.

Visual art formed an essential part of the festival’s identity. Works by Rolf Schwechheimer, Karl Eppelsheimer, Brigitta Leber, Rainer Wieczorek, Marina Linares, Lala Randela and Jeannette Abée were integrated throughout the site, creating a fluid parcours between garden, house and meadow. Their paintings, photographs, installations and performances shaped a continuous dialogue between image and sound. As Master of Ceremonies, Rolf Schwechheimer guided the festival with his characteristic generosity and artistic vision, weaving together the many contributions into a cohesive Gesamtkunstwerk.
