Mail art by IUOMA member Carina Granlund (Petsmo, Finland)
March 4, 2016 - First, I apologize for the terrible scans of this wonderful work received from Carina Granlund. I feel an imperative to share it even though I know the documentation is inadequate.
This is a piece made from a small box, very likely a matchbox. What you see (above) is the top of the box. A tiny book is attached to the red thread (below).
When the box is opened, this construction is found in the small compartment. The compartment is approx. 2 X 3 inches:
As you can see (hopefully), there are strips of paper with text similar to what is often used to make cut-ups. The fragments will combine and re-combine with movement of the box. They can become caught in the layers of thread and create all sorts of different configurations. Thus, I think of the work as a kind of text generator, although I am not certain exactly what Carina Granlund intended. I also think of this piece as a boekie. The strips can be removed too, and I experimented with them:
Here is the envelope:
Many thanks to Carina Granlund!
