The 'Velopes - 30 Years of Mail Art - now on CD

The long wait is over!

After 30 long years of evolution, some say de-volution, the most unexpected art eBook to ever feature the highly obscure and arcane subject of ‘Mail Art’ has arrived.

Mail art is merely mail turned into art, or visa-versa, that has gone through the postal system. Little of it is seen by the general public, but postal workers have a front row seat, and they will tell you that it comes in many shapes and sizes, and all very creative. Someone should do a book about it before the post office is gone forever. Well, some one has.

This mail art eBook is one side of a two way, 30 year correspondence, the purpose of which was to perhaps gain a toehold on the art world by way of scandalously decorating the lowly #10 business envelope.

Tired of being rejected by galleries, or poor sales by traditional means, my artist friend Wayne and I began to mail these ‘Velopes, as we call them, back and forth, hoping to outrage some postal big wig enough to call them to the attention of the press perhaps, or  the authorities, in any case. The years rolled by and try as we might to excite some notability, all but one or two were delivered without a peep. One did catch the eye of the local Post Mistress, who delivered the offensive ’Velope in a plain brown wrapper, with a terse warning to ’Tone it down’. It’s in the book.

Our project got a write-up in the local paper and collections of the ‘Velopes were shown in various art shows and I wrote an article about them for Gauntlet magazine. But for the most part they have remained ensconced in the ‘Underground’ world of art.

As you’ll see, the subject matter is diverse, but with an emphasis on  sexuality, humor, autobiography and the all around weirdness of Life. All intended to catch a weary mail carrier’s eye, and thus insure prompt delivery.

Obviously,  mere words cannot compare to the actual ‘Velope experience,  so I hasten you to proceed, but do remember that some of the subjects may be offensive to impressionable viewers. Parental discretion is advised.

And remember too, as you finger through them, that they ALL went through the mail.

This disk was made for PC use.
