RECEIVED: "I am no Susan" Mail-Art Collage from Fast Eyes (Fairfax Station, Virginia, USA)

Mail-art by IUOMA member Fast Eyes (Fairfax Station, Virginia, USA)

March 3, 2011 - New IUOMA friend Fast Eyes sent me this postcard-size collage for our first mail-art exchange. I did not previously know her or know of her. The location would be more or less the Baltimore-Washington, DC area. Clearly, she is someone whose work appeals to my preferences: a subtle blend of colors, exquisite textures, and overlays that create phenomenal depth. Fast Eyes also skillfully incorporates text, symbols, and numbers. She included a nice note on the reverse side:

Fast Eyes and I made contact at the IUOMA through the admiration of work by her friend Susan. Thus the "I am 'no Susan'" reference. The identity of the collage artist Susan has yet to be revealed. Perhaps someone can. Well, Fast Eyes is not Susan; she is a very talented mail-artist on her own. I look forward to receiving more of her very distinctive art. This is very sophisticated collage work, IMHO. So I am far from disappointed, Fast Eyes. Thank you for your work!

MAIL-ART PSYCHIC

A daring pick-up line gets your attention. M is still with J but now she's furious with her dad and refuses to have anything to do with K's wedding. She's going to wear funky booties and tights, but the bandage is going to throw off the look!. If you're the kind of girl who gets in a brawl, keep your nails short. Lucky numbers: 2, 6, 17, 23, 22, 41

Mail-art color of the day: Charcoal tweed

MAIL-ART QUOTE FOR THE DAY

All I have quickly at hand is the Donald Allen & George Butterick re-tread (Grove Press - falling to pieces) of the original anthology that needs no explanation. A snippet from Frank O'Hara's "Why I am not a Painter":

                                      ...My poem

is finished and I haven't mentioned

orange yet. It's twelve poems, I call

it ORANGES. And one day in a gallery

I see Mike's painting, called SARDINES.

A very rich piece, I like the dark silhouettes wandering about. Hmmm, I know people who can talk about nothing for much longer than 5 minutes...

OK, I'm off to clip my nails...

Bifidus, I know we share some of the same, what?, aesthetic preferences? Fast Eyes is great. Fine collage and I like the words too. It's just amazing there are all these artists to keep discovering. I hope we see more from Fast Eyes.

Everything you say about this piece is true, De Villo plus "Fast Eyes" is a way-past-cool name.
