Beautifully asemic and exquisitely understated work:
Lesley writes (on the back of her gorgeous "calling card") that the text in this booklet is from Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Sir Gawain being one of King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table. She also says that she made this an asemic version because she finds the olde English text incomprehensible (join the club). But just in case I want to give it a go, she includes in the last two-page spread part of a glossary that yields such morsels as to-morn = tomorrow morning and vederly = promptly. I'm incorporating to-morn and vederly into my vocabulary right now, as well as semblaunt ( = indication of his feelings).
I think this little booklet is a magnificent work of art. Lesley's asemics, like her collage elements, are placed carefully and used sparingly, and it all works together as if it has always been. It is very handsome and charming, and it commands respect: when I took it out of the envelope, I found myself holding it as if it were a lovely and fragile animal that might be wounded but isn't. The papers in the booklet, and the booklet itself, are solid and strong. I love it.
She also includes her nice little watercolor of a primate and returns an old paper-factory "sorted by" slip I'd sent her because it said to return it "should there be any complaint." She says she isn't complaining, just returning -- for me it has now become a mail-art bookmark. The blog gods won't let me post the scan of these last two items for some reason.
I absolutely love the treasures you sent me, Lesley Magwood Fraser ~ thank you very much!
