Mail-art by IUOMA member Not Hi Ng (San Pablo, California, USA)
July 19, 2014 - In my ongoing archival efforts, I came across a box of mail-art received in early 2013 that was never blogged or documented. Some real treasures have been uncovered including this dispatch from Not Hi Ng (OTM) and his Institute of Art Agnosticism.
Not Hi Ng’s pieces are often interactive, using an Event Score concept. He also creates ingenious devices from found material, and this talent has earned him the venerable TrashPo Litzer Prize. The opening scan includes an Event Score on a handmade sleeve (blue masking tape no less!) that contains an altered record. Here is the reverse side of the sleeve:
Inside the sleeve was this meditation wheel (or more properly Miracle Mind Mender) that is laden with MinXus symbology:
And the reverse:
Altered records are a recognized genre of MinXus relics, and this work by Not Hi Ng earns a place among the greatest achievements in this area. Not Hi Ng captures and contributes to the MinXus aesthetic. Also included in the dispatch is this wonderful, official certificate from the Institute. During the early MinXus-Lynxus festivals, the affinity between the Institute and M-L were quickly recognized. Not Hi Ng was named to the Order of the Tangerine Mink precisely because his expertise is so valued.
I am honored to have this certificate bestowed upon me. Not Hi Ng’s envelopes are always distinctive and interesting:
And the reverse:
While always struggling with being “a day late and a dollar short,” I am jubilant to finally share this (nearly) lost MinXus classic. Thank you, Not, for this incredible work and your patience. It shall be a part of The Book of MinXus.

Thx, WAR. I stand on the shoulders of giants, as they say.
Spectacular work here, De Villo....And congratulations on attaining another new title...
Hi An. U. Thank you. The Vinyl Art group has created a revival in altered records & cds. A lot of nice work there, IMHO.
Mail-artists have been making them for a long time.
Altered records, such as what Not Hi Ng has done here, were prominent during the MinXus Solar Festival 2012. They were called "solar disks," "sacred disks" and "asemic music." I think Not Hi Ng is responding to the MinXus disks. Here are some from Solar Festival 2012:
Solar 2012 poster - notice "solar disk" (upper left)
"Sacred disk" by Dark wall - I think Carina Granlund in Finland has this.
Very inspiring! Miracle Mind Mender wheel reminds me of something I've seen in Vinyl Art group in IUOMA.
Amazing!
DVS, it is hard to keep up with everything in the mail, and everything in life.
Dr. Ng, anartist!
I'm with you, BG. I'm really embarrassed to admit this & a pile of equally good stuff were sitting in a box underneath the command center here for like a year. This one HAD to be shared regardless of linear time.
Some might remember that DK created the PMM (Personality Modulation Machine). So Not Hi Ng adds the MMM.
Here is the link for the Institute of Art Agnosticism for anyone interested in pursuing further.
Man, this stuff is good! "We have our doubts" and the significance of insignificance!
