The little birdies...were in the upper corner of ad flyers for a supermarket

that are thrown at the bottom of the stairs of my apartment building.

No one picks the ads up...except me ;-)

A great source of mail art omens...also good for:

Thanks for the blog, Sue,

...yep, favor-a-TLP, get-a-TLP :-)

I am liking the idea of calling them TLP = Trashy Little Pamphlets!

Right you are, Stripygoose, the zines, pamphlets, chapbooks, etc. etc. have been intertwined with the mail art network at least since the 60s. I have seen assembling zines - like those done by Cheryl Penn - in archives from the 60s.

The zines that were so prominent in the 80s often seem to have evolved out of Punk rock fanzines. They often had a music focus but also ran collage, poetry, fiction, etc. They used mail art received to provide content.  For example, I first saw mail art by CrackerJack Kid in a fanzine.

There has always been some political messaging, but I gather it was more pronounced in the 60s and 70s.

DVS (which I think stands for De Villo Sloan) I thank you for your kind and informative response. I'm always learning something new on here. I guess there's a whole history of zines and other self/marginal publications - some are political, some arty, some both?  :-)

Oh - and in a recent discussion about TLPs I saw there was some conjecture the term is taken from Frank Zappa's song "Dirty Love," which is entirely possible.
