I think the surf's up and I'm in way over my head. --LInda
'Jungle Fever' and 'Surf Beat' are Dick's best known ones. Yes, it's r'n'r -- but instrumental r'n'r, which at the time, was a very minority thing. Then 'Guitar Gods' came along. Somewhere along the line came Duane Eddy and the Rebel Rousers
I see. So is there something I might have heard of his music? Surf music is not r&r? And I still like the Beach Boys. --Linda Rhonda
I must tell you Linda Rhonda, surf guitar is different from surf music. The Beach Boys were a vocal group rather than an isntrumental group, and they sung in harmony. Dick D was -- at the time -- a way out, innovative guitar maestro, playing completely different, and definitely not 'Sing along with me' music
I do like surf guitar. Like the early Beach Boys. --Linda
Dick Dale is 'The King of Surf Guitar'. he worked closely with Leo Fender in the 50's to develop the Strat and Tele guitars. There are claims that he was the first Heavy Metal guitarists.
ok. Who is Dick Dale? --Linda
Steve: somewhere the Floyd play(ed?) guitars.
Do you know the story about David Gilmour and the 1st Fender Strat?
Circa 1967, the Floyd gave a concert at the Uiversity I was at. usually bands turned up in a small truck with one roadie/gofer/manager.
Floyd arrived with 2 enormous trucks full of speakers and stuff, and built a giant wall of amps. The sound was incredible.
I have some Dick (the Lick) Dale albums around here somewhere.
Thanks for the invite. The next (and first) time I'm in Portland, I'll be sure to come a-listenin'.
Linda: of course you may interrupt. Steve will no doubt update us all on the current in/out status of guitar groups.
I hope they're going somewhere fun. They deserve it, they work so hard.
When you come to my house, Val, I'll hide Pink Floyd and all the techno and bring out the Dick Dale records!
Excuse me; may I interrupt for just a moment? This all seems to imply that guitar groups are going somewhere. Right? --Linda
