1952 (when I sent a "Thankyou for my Birthday Present' to my Grandma, and illustrated it with a little drawing). Since then my Mail Art history has been, well, interesting
Thanks for your encouragement. I'd love to send you something. This coming week I'm going to work on some pieces and will send you one of them. Then I hope you'll do the same!
You asked me "Why Prairie Kittin"? ... The name on my birth certificate is Katherine Prairie. The nickname I've always gone by for Katherine is "Kittin" or "Kat". So, for my online ID, I simply reversed the order. Instead of Kittin Prairie, I go by Prairie Kittin. So, you see, no mystery there. :-)
Thank you for the welcome. I shall be sending you something soon! My worry of putting up my snail mail is due to privacy issues in my home country. I do not know how 'safe' it would be to have it available in a public forum. Is there any other way I can share my snail mail address with friends in here and not keep it open?
Hello Valentine Thanks for the email. I'm still investigating how it works and no doubt I will send thee to help me. I confess that I interpret reasonably English and so I'm using the google translator ... so sorry something very serious or strange rs in writing, but I am very happy to be participating in this network and would rather start an exchange with you ... I'm doing and I'll send you soon. I will update my site to start new trade ... Follow my address. Av Fagundes Varela, 456/104 - Jardim Atlantico Olinda PE 53140-080 hugs
Many thanks for the warm welcome into IUOMA and your detailed letter about how to find my way around here!
My apologies for the delay in getting back to you.
I am really interested in learning more about how Mail art and things at IUOMA works and how and what I can do best to be a part of the same. As you might have discovered already, I am completely new to mail art as an art form and only came across it as a part of my lessons in an Online course (Introduction to Art: Concepts and Techniques) that I am currently undergoing in Coursera.
I would highly appreciate if you have any other suggestions/advise that I can follow on...I have been through the different tabs of the website and till date have created just 1 piece of mail art. I would definitely like to exchange some mail art with you. Should I just post my address on the profile page here or send you as a message here? I have updated my profile details.
Hope to get as much involved in IUOMA as possible! Very excited :)
Hello Valentine Thank you for the welcome and for being my mentor ... I will start using the site and if you need I contact. See you soon, Eduardo Romero
Thanks Val! I felt all kinds of special getting your message! I'm still putting together my art space in our new home... Well, kind of a new home.... we just put a new house in the same property... Sorry I ramble.... but as soon as my space is done I would love to swap some art with you! =*)
Hello Mentor Val! Thank you so much for your kind welcome! ;) Yes I would love to send you something! It may take a while since I'm busy right now, but something will reach you soon for sure.
Thank you for the welcome to IUOMA. I think I have a pretty good idea of what is going on with Mail Art, so that probably means I have some wrong ideas. ;-) I'll read the introductory stuff just in case anything has changed, or I have anything wrong.
I used to do this when I was a kid. I was introduced to it in 1976 by Mama San Ra'ab Rampa - T. Lobsang Rampa's wife. She knew I was an avid pen-pal and HAM radio phreak so she suggested that I try Mail Art. I kept it up for 11yrs and only stopped when the demands of work and life redirected my attention.
I was reintroduced to Mail Art by some contacts on Google+ via Moan Lisa's Art AkademieTM. Due to her being censored and banned several times there have been a few name changes and duplicate groups have sprung up. I took over for Moan Lisa as a substitute instructor so she could concentrate on publishing her poetry and images. I was just promoted to "Owner" of the Art AkademieTM G+ community https://plus.google.com/communities/102983551796186140043. There are also some newer Fluxus and other DaDa inspired art groups popping up on G+.
I recently became part of the "Panda West" Mail Art group as established by Amanda Pandamonium. I have a lot of work to do to catch up with mail-outs due to a severe shortage of funds. I hope to encourage and promote the Mail Art and Fluxus communities I have become involved with. I joined IUOMA as a means of expanding my knowledge and participation.
I acquired the moniker That Hairy Canadian in purely innocent ways. I was working in the UK as an IT hired gun troubleshooter, et al. It was nearly impossible for stressed out clients to remember my name when they were in the thick of problems. Clients would commonly ask for that hairy Canadian guy who is ever so smart, polite, and helpful whenever they would call for support (without realising I was an executive corporate officer). I quickly began to be referred to by that nickname on my IT techno-adventures around the UK, Ireland, and the European mainland. I always had extremely long hair (pony tail for corporate work) and sported a full beard for most of my life. Last year I began shaving for the first time in years and worried that it would disqualify me for the nickname, but due to my ever increasing hair length I feel that it is a secure moniker. As far as other body hair is concerned, I fall well below average for furriness. Any connection between my nickname and assorted sexual references is non sequitur. ;-)
Maybe you CAN help me with one silly question. How do you decide who to send things to from a list of people you haven't contacted before? I have a Mail Art package ready to send and a list of names for "Panda West", but keep tripping up when it comes to selecting the recipient. Also, how do you know when you have collected enough to send without over doing it (or under)? Self doubt rings loudly in my ears.
I have added your mailing info to my list and should be able to send something along to you soon. In response to the several messages I see from other IUOMA members here regarding people not listing their address --> My mailing address is;
Well, I'm slowly getting used here. I have visited several groups and signed up for a few find something in common. I sent a postcard to you, but then I was wondering if it was better to send in a closed envelope ... as this is the first time I send, I wait ... As I am in Sao Paulo, the seal will be here, but soon will be Olinda, Pernambuco. abs
I am NOT a monster! LOL! Well, ok... maybe a bit of one.
The person who I know as Moan Lisa (currently) is a real woman, poet, and graphic artist living in Iowa. You can find her published writings here (downloadable)... https://www.smashwords.com/profile/view/moanlisa. The person you met as Moaning Lisa is in the same circles. This picture is of his performance honouring her. He apologised profusely for posing as her. The differences between the individuals can be fairly easily determined via comparative analysis of speech, grammar, spelling, and writing styles as well as their artworks. None of it really matters because the reason I'm involved is Art sharing.
I began working in the UK through a temp agency (banking & financial [Euromoney]), then landed the position of Systems Admin for UK Telecom Plc. I then began contracting out to a number of agencies under my company name, Firecroft IT Limited. My career course was definitely not linear, but always involved creative technological solutions through applying the principles of scientific reasoning. A complete c.v. is available upon request (LOL!).
My Mail Art question was really how to select a name from an existing list of contacts, not establishing new ones. Your suggestions and input were helpful nonetheless. My question about content was more about how little is too little, rather than too much. I know that there are many things in life I am not comfortable with determining on my own and that it is my responsibility to learn how to deal with them myself. Thanks for the helpful suggestions, though.
I look forward to maintaining a long and fruitful relationship with IUOMA.
Sincerely,
That Most Exalted Canadian of Follicular Profundity
I'm glad you liked it! It took me a while to send it because I had a health setback.... Feeling better now and able to walk to the post office! Looking forward to getting soe from you!

Val, I have an administrative question.... How do I change my user name? I am Helga Deb. When I set up my user, it must have asked for a last name. I would like to take the "Michael" off.

Oh you didn't bore me at all. I love to learn and hear what others say about a place "Darlington" where I live... I wonder how many other Darlington's are out there in the world and here in the USA. I would love to swap some mail art with you, would you like to swap back with me? Maybe something on "Darlington" Thanks for the history about your Darlington. Now, I'll see what I can find about mine. I lived here as long as I've been married...30 yrs... was born in NJ and parents came here to PA.
Arty Slides: a great idea! I bought a bunch of those cardboard display squares for coins: similar to the 35mm slides, but with a round opening and clear plastic covering. I was going to make a series of objects and mount them in the coin squares, but I haven't figured out what to make yet...

Bonjour Valentine,
