Hello Jon. Thanks a million for your zine! I got it today and have already started reading it. Good stuff! I should have a review of it on my blog when I'm finished. Take it handy!
Fantastic '6800 miles'! Fantastic journal! Thanks for sharing it with us all.
It makes great reading.
I especially liked:
-- all the hotel and casino ventures, and it was good that you enjoyed being with your parents, even though your father seems to be a bit of a mischief maker (day 18)
-- reading about all of your food adventures (did no-one go to a bathroom at all? No, don't answer that!). What's a 'hushpuppy'? In England it's a sort of non-Elvis type suede shoe. How many pounds did you put on in 29 days?
-- Pecos TX dudes with cowboy hats, cowboy boots and swimming costumes
-- the nothingness, emptiness and boring-ness of driving long distances when there's nothing to see
-- the vinyl & music store adventures
-- taco trunk eat outs (we only have pizza vans, alas)
-- the Petrified Forest and Dearly Departed and the flea market in Pasadena and the Big Sur (did you meet a Confederate General from... Richard?) and the St Louis City Museum
-- losibng and finding Route 66...and getting your kicks on it, of course
GREAT! Diffferent to, but just as absorbing as, your Oriental adventure.
Hey, mon ami: don't be ultra-sensitive -- my comment wasn't meant to suggest multi-generation Foster xenophobia. Au contraire/just the opposite, as I really enjoyed your description of the fat Brit confrontation on the bus. There have been many, many times when I'd have reacted just as your father did -- do give him my regards!
Jon, received your zine today! Read the first few pages standing in the kitchen on my way to doing the next thing but couldn't put it down. i like the way you write and look forward to reading more when the next thing's done. Thank you!
Bonjour mon ami (and Burt Reynolds) -- thanks for the card, the NC sticker ("Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina in the morning" -- was that a 'Wake up and make love to me' song?), and the Hush puppies recipe. Now I know why they are called 'Hush puppies' -- but it should really be 'Hush - puppies'. But I am unable to sleep because I don't know why the Hush Puppy shoes are so named. Katerina has been staying with me for a couple of days. Last night I cooked us my very special lapin au vin (rouge): I think I'll stick to that rather than the puppies. But I do have a very troublesome cat, called Trouble, so I might try the recipe out on him, thus, 'Hush - moggy'. If you've lost the thread of this (assuming there ever was one), worry not as I'll be mailing you something back soon. Thanks again & regards, Val
And no, I didn't get a China zine. I'm always 24 hours late and things that are offered are always snapped up while I'm sleeping! I think that happened with the music thingy too. Hope you liked my boekiezine.
Bonjour! Glad you liked the sticker. I've never heard of either Thurston nor Lee, but then again I only listen to old vinyl records. Duane Eddy is currently twanging on in the background; Bon weekend, Val
So glad it made you laugh, it's been sitting around here for several weeks making all the teenagers giggle as I tried to decide who might appreciate such a card. I obviously picked the right guy :)
We'll see how it goes, but I'm looking forward to trying to do it. I imagine not all books will capture my imagination, but there's probably still something to be said about them.
HEY! The big thing has arrived!! It's a lovely thing, Jon! I'm so impressed and inspired that I've been trying tape tonight on all kinds of papers...I'll send you my attempts if you like?
Thanks for the note Jon! Of course I would love a Jon F. booklet, but please don't feel obligated... It sounds like you're enjoying making them though, always a good thing! ^_^ btw, what do you teach?
I'm looking forward to some new work from you, Jon. I'm trying to regularize a mailing list for people in the Trashpo group, so you'll probably get more DKULTNY stuff.
Jon, thank you for a unique collage. The colored tape adds a unique dimension to the composition. It has been added to my personal blog as well as the photo stream on My Page.
Thank you for friending me--I look forward to your next missive in my mail box. Yes, there are quite a few of us from the San Francisco area (I counted 28 from there, plus there are more of us in the vicinity as well). We have 2 famous IUOMA mail artists, John Held Jr and Jenny Hinchcliff. Jenny has authored a book. Go to her IUOMA page and check her links. John has a mail art exhibition going up in San Francisco on Feb. 2nd! I plan to see it!
Thanks for putting my mail art piece on your blog. I like your idea of keeping a record of your activities. I also enjoyed reading about your love affair with tape.
