Thank You for the very nice blogging of my envelope, much appreciated! Wish I was trashpoing more like the Queen of T. but I am a slow learner and have to be a spectator as it is.
Hey DK. How are you? I'm back from my retreat and trying to catch up on my tasks now. I've posted your last postcard here. There's an interesting story in that card. How do you find such great scraps?
Diane, if you still have the photo of your mysterious owl fortune, I would love if you could post it again on my wall. I liked it very much and I lost all the comments before August. Thank iouuuuuuuu :-))))
Way-Extra WOW in mail arts from you today. I'm overwhelmed! The trashpo mobile is one of the very best presents ever; I absolutely love it. Thank You, DK! All to be blogged soon.
And your daughter made an appropriately trashpo-classy little collage, which is also a winner. Clearly she was born with your utterly interesting art instincts. I've already photographed the mobile in case it falls apart, but I don't think it's going to. Can't stop touching it, though.
Yay! I'm glad you liked it. I just learned how to make that non-adhesive accordion/star binding on my North Carolina retreat. In fact, I made the original embroidery book sitting out in the woods during my retreat. I would love to make a whole suite of travel books now, so I'm collecting pictures this month while I'm in and out of town. Catch up with you in a few weeks!

Why are stamps placed on the top right hand corners of letters?
Well, Ms Keys, postage stamps were first introduced in May 1840 in the UK. It's hard to imagine now, but at the time a postage stamp, and paid mail at a fixed rate, were brand new ideas. The just-beginning Post Office issued some sort of advice sheet to local Post Office masters (it was a male only job then) giving them instructions about the sale and use of the stamps -- the first one being the Penny Black. One of the issues that had to be addressed was where on an envelope this little sticky bit of paper called 'a postage stamp' should be placed? Various places were tried in experiments (there was no franking automation -- everything was hand-stamped, so that wasn't an iisue), and it was decided that it should be on the top right hand corner. What followed from this was that Queen Victoria's head on the Penny Black would look to the left.
It sounds so simple and obvious, but the debate behind it was quite long and not without some controversy.
And since that day all postage stamps everywhere have been placed in the top right hand corner, and when faces are on the stamps they almost always face to the left or look straight ahead, never to the right.
Another boring, or interesting, fact about the first ever UK stamps.
No other country was issuing them at the time, so it was unncessary to put 'Great Britain' on them. GB stamps are the only ones in the world that don't -- even today -- have the country name on them.
All other countries, following the regulations of the Universal Postal Union, MUST include the name of the country on their stamps.
Whahoo! Glad to see that the box arrived! I packed it at the seaside shack, under the olive tree, and I guess that little critter got inside then. I hope you "eliminated" the threat to the American environment, we don't want any foreign element crawling in the bushes of Elgin, Illinois! Well, the trash pieces can be used and "recycled" into mail art or trash art at your exhibit...have fun with all of it!
