I read that USPS will be shutting down smaller post offices soon. I fear my little town PO may be one of the ones to go, so I took a photo. I’d love to see your hometown post office, too.
Maxima, it’s a great idea to share photos of our post office. The old and small buildings are my favorites too. Soon I'll go to my p.o. and I'll share it with you.
This is my local post office, which I can actually SEE from the back of my house. However, this is the same post office that is home to the Mail Art Police--the ones who have given me a bad time about my mail art. SO... I almost never visit it other than to drop things off (postcards, etc.) in the drop box (pictured) outside. All of my mail art (including a few pieces hopefully heading out tomorrow) I drop in random mail boxes OFF of the island. Even the the entries for your Goth Emporium projects have been mailed from a different post office, at the next town north.
So amazing! Serendipity at its best. I had just wrote the following when I found an invitation to join this group.
This is what I wrote:
Mail Art for ever? I wish! I am so afraid our postal services (I live in England), misnomed 'Royal' mail but really a business, is going to stop delivering letters. Prices go up and up since our right wing government sold it , postboxes are disappearing and now when I tried to buy stamps by post their website is down and have been so for many weeks. If I go to the local post office, which moved from a dedicated building to the back of a shop, I cannot buy all I need because they haven't so many!!!
I will have to post from different places but they are fast disappearing.
Oh no, Mail Art Martha, that’s terrible! Thankfully I haven’t had any problems ordering stamps from USPS. The world is changing, not always for the best.
It is my post office. I know it is impressive. I live in the hyper center of Bordeaux (256,045 inhabitants). This large building is in fact the General Directorate of the Post of Bordeaux, with administrative offices, business services, premises for postal workers. The post office with stamps, machines, etc... is on the ground floor. There are post offices in every district of Bordeaux, and mailboxes everywhere. In France, the post office has been half privatized. There is a lot of turnover and the service is deteriorating. I have had a lot of problems recently (undelivered newspapers, letters to neighbors, etc.). Consumers in France complain a lot about the post office. In the countryside many small offices close.
Helene, Again, I’m sorry to hear the postal service is deteriorating. It makes me sad. Mail has always been very important to me. That is a huge building.
Dear friends, I didn't intend to post pictures of my post office 119048, but Stephen Rife was interested in the view of the house, so I made a decision. Today I will post photos borrowed from the Internet here, and later I will take pictures of the interior.
Russia Post Office 119048 is located in Moscow, at 29 Usacheva Street, Building 9. House 29 occupies an entire block and consists of several separate buildings. This block of 25 hectares was built in 1920-1930s and is called "New houses for Workers on Usachevka". It was built by architects A. I. Meshkov, N. Molokov, N. Shcherbakov, and Galkin and engineers G. A. Maslennikova and V. Volkova. Style: constructivism. "New houses for Workers on Usachevka" refers to one of Moscow's first examples of an integrated development of a large housing estate. The 25-hectare area is built up with single-type four- to five-storey apartment blocks with two- to three-room flats, designed for individual occupancy. In order to compensate for the asceticism of the rationalist architecture, the author of the project emphasised the corners and left the upper stories in the form of a frieze unplastered. The complex consists of symmetrical and closed blocks. In the areas in between there are courtyards with green areas, playgrounds and driveways. At the same time kindergartens and nurseries, a school, a dispensary and a department store were built.
A post office is located in one of the buildings. Here is a picture of the Building 9 from the corner (the entrance to the post office on the left, behind the cars, not very clearly visible in the photo). Photographer: Ksenia Erdes, 2010. This is how the house looks today.
A view of the "New houses for Workers on Usachevka" just after construction is completed. Building 9 is on the right in the distance. Photographer: American photographer Branson DeCou (1892 - 1941), 1931.
Several contemporary photographs of the entrance to the post office at 29 Usacheva Street, Building 9. The house looks very shabby in the photos, but the façade has been repaired and painted this year. The author of the photos is unknown.
Hi Ilya, I did see that group first and investigated it. It wasn’t focused primarily on photos of the post office so I thought I’d make my own group and invite my friends. Thank you for all the wonderful photos. Amazing how big the buildings are.
There I just uploaded a photo of small Post Office (Пошта) in Serbia (actually that one is one from which I sometimes send my letters from to whole wide world) If anybody would like to exchange with me, feel free to message me for more details. Ta, cheers.
Oh my, Pam! I blew the photo up and saw the "wanted" poster with YOUR face on it and something about "postal violations"??? Absolutely SHOCKING! Is there a reward, er, uh...are you forced to wear disguises when you post things??? Oh my stars!

We don’t have proper post offices AT ALL anymore, just ‘service desks’ in supermarkets or other stores. I hate it.
