You will note the Martha Stuart School of Asemic wallpaper has provided us with a number of talented asemic writers ready, capable, and deserving of having their work appear in the books. Is there a method to the madness after all?
  • received some asemic text from super dooper cooper.

neither val nor i can make any sense of it,

so we decided i belongs here:

This came in my mail box from Val please share with superhero  ~

While I am not so much with the technical side of computers, I do have several
email addresses, including a little used Google mail.  I was able to access the
Google Mail account, but the Ning account did not accept it.

Why?  I don't know, at least I was able to communicate through a different venue.

  • well, all i see is aesthetics in it.

    i can't find any meaning.

    isn't that what asemics is?

  • shoot me now.

it may be your last chance.

Almost all the definitions I've seen say it can't be a recognizable, existing language. Now I'm not getting into angels dancing on pinheads here! You will see some recognizable language, perhaps, in work that is asemic-vispo hybrid. A lot of that is here. Language that is indeterminate or incomprehensible is something else. And bad writing is probably still bad writing.
  • perhaps you just need to take more lsd to see what i see.

    i see asemic writing.

i will stand by that to the death.

  • Samuel Montalvetti

    Ja!!

    Salud!

  • if you had any idea whatever what i am going through this week, dvs.

    an inkling at all.

i think i am being fairly good humored, considering.

  • but i'll drop it.

as this group and i obviously don't get along.

  • De Villo Sloan

SH - I'm KIDDING! I'm really sorry you are having a bad time. I did not suspend you.

  • De Villo Sloan

Glad to hear your asemic pieces are headed my way, Mim. I have other mail-art from you that is, I think, connected with 365. Very nice work with vispo and asemic references in places. I'll shoot for a retrospective Mim blog to bring us up to the present.

Mim - I think what you did with slicing letters from the alphabet is a great approach, if I didn't say this elsewhere

  • Mim Golub Scalin

Thanks, De Villo. I was feeling a bit anxious about this, as I really am such a newby to asemic. I mean, I get what it appears to be, but doing it myself, that's another story. Off to teach teachers how to use mail art in their classrooms. A paying gig. Lucky moi!
  • prettylily

Mim, The eagle has landed!  People, I promise you folks you will NOT be disappointed.  It is a WONDERFUL contribution.  I hope you all get yours soon.
  • prettylily

    Thank you Mim!
  • De Villo Sloan

Mim, I see it more that you committed yourself, dug in, learned, experimented. I've seen work by some of the "classic" asemic writers - can't remember, can find it on line - who took the approach you took. That's an indication you're on the right track, not that there is right or wrong. Anyway, I LIKE the results.
  • Samuel Montalvetti

    Hola DVS

    gracias

  • De Villo Sloan

Roberto from Puerto Rico sent me a wonderful piece. Hola Samuel! Will be back to answer your question soon.

  • John M. Bennett

Piece by Sheila E. Murphy & John M. Bennett

  • prettylily

    Interesting work, for sure!

Buena pregunta. Voy apreguntar a los demás. Saludos, DVS
  • De Villo Sloan

Hi group, Samuel Montalvetti (in book 2) asked about books by asemic writers to read (or look at). Great question. I'd like to hear some suggestions myself. I named Gysin and Michaux - those are pretty classic. Are there any actual books of asemic writing you think we should know about? If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 asemic books would you want to have with you?
  • PIRO

  • Mim Golub Scalin

Tim Gaze, a designer and publisher of asemic writing sums it up beautifully on his website:

    “It looks like writing,
but we can’t quite read it.”

    Found this quote just now!

  • De Villo Sloan

A warm welcome to Theresa Ann Aleshire Williams - a new member of Asemic Writing for Mail-Artists. Please look through the threads. There's a great deal of information here. Feel free to ask questions - group members are great with helping.

Good clarification, John. "Naked Lunch" does not contain asemic writing. I wanted to clearly establish for Samuel which Burroughs I meant = William S. Burroughs, author of "Naked Lunch." Asemic writing can be found in collaborations Burroughs did with Brion Gysin during the London era. Sorry for the confusion. Suggesting "Naked Lunch" is asemic is absurd - I realize this.
  • De Villo Sloan

Here is an example of a Gysin-Burroughs collaboration piece that has asemic writing as well as other elements:

Rub Out The World Brion Gysin and William S. Burroughs

  • De Villo Sloan

Here's a William Burroughs painting "It Exploded." Asemic suggestive, perhaps

  • Samuel Montalvetti

    Sue Bowen  ASEMIC recibido

    Gracias

  • Mim Golub Scalin

Doesn't this look like asemic writing?
  • De Villo Sloan

great one Mim, imitation asemic writing; it had to happen ;)))
  • De Villo Sloan

On the subject of Mim & cut-ups, here's some recent mail-art I received from her. Note in particular the work at the top:

Mail-art by Mim Golub Scalin (Virginia, USA)

Can the Burroughs cut-up method be used to create asemic writing? Mim's work would suggest you can. She's a collage artist so comes by this naturally. Chopping up the existing alphabet and rearranging material (as randomly as possible) could lead to language and image discoveries generally, I think.

  • Mim Golub Scalin

That is a brochure my friend brought me from The Republic of Georgia. Fascinating. I thought it was asemic writing!
  • Samuel Montalvetti

    Salud!!!! Amigos

  • MaryAnne

I have so far received four mailings as part of the asemic book project number 1. All the covers are scanned into "my photos" although they do not have much to show for their journey through the postal system.
all being well I should start sending out my own contributions this week sometime.
  • De Villo Sloan

David Stafford has become an asemic commentator for us, part cynic and part cheerleader. With all the ether, it's always good to have reality checks and keep things in perspective: Latest David Stafford asemic piece:

    DeVillo in Cryptonia

  • Mim Golub Scalin

    Brilliant!
  • De Villo Sloan

If you can't laugh at yourself.....

MaryAnne - thanks for the update on chapters you are receiving. Good to hear from you.

  • Bifidus Jones

david's piece is the highlight of my day--thanks for posting!
