Feel Mail

Mail that wants to be touched. Whether it is a soft fabric or a stimulating material, such as paper fiber or metal, whether it feels smooth or ribbed, anything goes as long it's inviting to your fingers!

Monday I received two pieces of mail art. Great....one is from Kathy Barnett. The four divers actually move! I have not received anything like this before.

Another one is from Ann Golden. The ATC on the right is one of the first ATC's she completed after pulling out some old stamps. Lots of texture on the ATC on the left and envelope is full of texture.

Thank you so much to Ruth Giles' for the plant dyed email. I love it, and find it fascinating, as I majored in fiber arts in collage and did a bit of plant dyeing myself. Very cool fibers and composition, too. I love it!

Thank you to Kathy Barnett for the beautiful Bunny Feel Mail! Such a grande envelope, and inside - what a surprise! A beautifully jointed pair of classy rabbits in their vintage car. I love it - thank you so much!

I fear this Feel Mail of a cartoony sheep did not reach it's destination... I posted it on 15 July 2020 to Pam Chavez.

  • PAM CHAVEZ

Oh no, Sabrina! It's a beautiful envelope, I would have loved to receive it! It hasn't gotten here yet, but maybe it will eventually get to me. Thank you for thinking of me and sending me your lovely artwork. The fuzzy sheep is probably having a great time traveling the world.

Sabrina!!  Look what showed up yesterday!! I love it, thank you so much! It must have taken the long way to my house ;-).

  • Sabrina S

Pam! I am so glad. I really didn't expect it to reach you after about six weeks now!

  • Susan Gnaedinger

I received this feel mail from Debra Mulnik.  Its interesting because there is a process involved. The art is s print of a lino cut. It's been added to with colored pencil, collage and now a tape measure. Lots of texture on the back because she sewed the measuring tape onto the art with thread.

  • Carien van Hest

    Love the colors, too.

  • Laura Robertson

Glad my package got there. Mail is moving slowly from Canada to the US right now.  I'm seeing things get to and from Europe faster.

Another fantastic artwork. Can you explain a little about the technique, Heide?

  • Heide Monster

    for Carien

I got this idea from a book called “Sharpie Art Workshop for Kids” by Kathy Barbro (Author),  you need a piece of card stock, white glue, a glue stick, aluminum foil.  First you draw a simple shape with the white glue on the card stock (or chip board).  Let dry completely.  You might have to add a second layer, as the glue has a tendency to add its own ideas (I love art supplies that get involved).  I use Elmer’s craft bond because it doesn’t flatten when dry.   Then rub a glue stick all over.  I usually rub this in with my fingers.  Immediately starting in the center, lay the foil on top and rub outwards.  You might need a cotton tip stick for the smaller crevices. Wrap the foil around the edges, glue to back. At this point the book tells you to use a sharpie and color the image. Here is one I did following the instructions  Now I instead pour Pebeo mixed media paints.  . This is a solvent based medium, so use in a well ventilated area.  It takes at least 24 hours to dry completely.

  • Carien van Hest

Heide, thanks a lot for the instructions! I will try this technique for sure!
