Event Description

For Mail Artists, the message is the medium. Shipping boxes become sculpture and envelopes are transformed into radical traveling collages. Combining the tactility of snail mail with the virtual limitlessness of internet-based collaboration, Mail Art is an ever-expanding, worldwide phenomenon.

The Unexpected: Art in Transit is a traveling group exhibit to feature up to 50 contributions from members of the International Union of Mail Artists.

This exhibition acquaints viewers with the non-competitive, visual conversation that is Mail Art – featuring a colorful array of Artstamps, collaged postcards, and package assemblages from around the world.

SUBMISSIONS CLOSED. Thank you.

*After the exhibit, all works will be forwarded to another I.U.O.M.A. postal exhibit somewhere else in the world on behalf of Ringling College.* Sister exhibit will be announced shortly.

_____________

This exhibition will explore the possibilities of a highly collaborative, versatile medium of expression. It will demonstrate the intimacy of visual correspondence and raise questions about the individual history of mailed objects, as well and the purpose of art outside of commercial use.

Exhibitions will be installed on Wed Oct 31 and dismantled on Wednesday November 28. The pieces will be forwarded to a sister Mail Art exhibit in another international college.
