That is - putting mink oil on your boots. People don't smear themselves with mink oil in the summer.

Carina, wow, I'll be more aware of the Finnish-Swedish thing. Dark wall is, like, impaired.

This Mink Oil - thing. You all have me feeling strange about it. Mink oil is well-known where I am. I can see why Cheryl doesn't know about it. I'm not sure of the status of minks in Finland. Mink oil is outdoorsy winter stuff - like LL Bean.

New York was huge in the fur trade, so maybe we're hooked into that history here. I imagine the traders & colonists got the mink oil idea from the Indians - just like tobacco. The Indians - the Iroquois where I am - were always smearing themselves with animal fats for something - including to keep the mosquitos & deer flies away in the warmer months.

Plenty of people use mink oil, especially with all emphasis on natural products, although of course you've got all the anti-fur stuff, but, anyway, mink oil is normal to me. It's in the stores.

I would think, in Illinois, DK would know about it.

VERY nice book - I can see that Mixus Publications are spreading... I need more inserts for my book on Meta-L - how on earth can Hology have more pages than Meta-l???

Yes, Marie I'm (we are) a lucky duck receiving this work!

Good design of that mink oil bottles, DVS! I did not either know about this mink oil, I should, but new generations are growing up and things are forgotten.. DK always asks the right questions!

I have seen the open letter, thank you, I'm very honored. I belong to a minority in Finland, which is Swedish speaking (I speak also Finnish), We have two official languages in our country, but sometimes I have identity issues..

My mum always says, if you bring mink oil to the boil it will coil. Try it.

You're so lucky, Carina, this is a fantastic book. I LOVE the Eohippus poem, and that page is my favorite one.

Who put the thistle in DK's jammies? Grumpy monkey!

DK, mink skin secretes oils that protects their fur. They're water animals like otters and so the oils repel water.

The crotch page comes from one of those dress design kits, Simplicity or something. Those patterns have very cool, almost transparent paper that I use for background to do asemic writing on - I found some at the junk store. That page happened to have the pattern for assembling the crotch.

What any of it has to do with Minxus, I'm not sure. I was hoping no one would notice.

Mink secretions. sounds really gross. Does it work on faux fur? Where does crotch views fit into minxuslinxus exactly? I'm absolutely sure I have no clue.

DK, amazing you don't know about mink oil. It is used for waterproofing leather & minimizing road salt damage. Ideal for snowy winter climes. There's a Kiwi brand.

It is, literally, from mink secretions & glands because their fur is so brilliant & waterproof. We have all sorts of synthetic waterproofs now, but I imagine this goes back to the days of fur traders & finding natural agents for waterproofing. Nothing more American than mink oil, unless it's Snake Oil. Slush is eternal for some of us.

I once went to a lecture by a professor on minks in early American lit - that was her "specialization" - mink glands. She had charts showing mink glands & what they could be used for. I had to work pretty hard not to laugh because everyone else was taking it very seriously.
