So true, richard!
The story of Johnny Appleseed is not about "an apple a day keeps the doctor away". It was about settlers having to plant trees on their property, and with the "whiskey tax" laws, Chapman showed them how to make apple cider and strong Apple Jack (distilling outside in the freezing winters :-) so Jack Daniels didn't have to pay taxes! Some great tales in that book: "Botany of Desire". and the "healthy" edible apples came into the market during the Prohibition times, the dear ladies encouraging good ol' American Apple Pie!...and apple sauce, and in Turkey they even have a nice apple tea:
hmmm, nice, all gone :-)
05.11.21 Dare Ms. Katerina N. & Ms. Marguerite in PA,...yes, I've always thought that John Chapman (Johnny Appleseed) was one of those rare true "American Heroes"---- but just today learned (on line) that he was not necessarily promoting edible apples but was pushing the sort that is used in Apple Cider & or "Apple Jack". ---& hence, his popularity, Mister Chapman was pushing alcohol to & for the American West. Also, someone once told me that American Farmers of the past developed many wonderful & unique apples ...now long gone. The varieties that we all experience in our grocery stores are there simply because they "look good" & or travel well to the marketplace....but what do I know?... I'm usually easily contented by what I believe to be a good crisp apple. SinCelery, Richard C.
So luv the packet of goodies, as a retired teacher :-)
'knowing "A is for Apple" :-)
We also know that John Chapman began his apple seed adventures from Penn.,
heading "west" to Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, etc. as settlers in the "Territories"
needed to plant orchards, having a certain number of trees, to claim their land.
