A Blog Post for Michalis Kotsaris - Metropolis

Mail Art Received End of December 2010.

The Crimson Giant and the Tower of Babel is obviously  not over.  Michalis sent me a VERY interesting card which references the movie Metropolis  by Von Fritz Lang.  This movie is set in the gargantuan city
(Metropolis) where the elite live high above earth in skyscrapers and the
workers  live in disgusting, dangerous
conditions underground.   The under dogs are looking for a leader to
save them from their  existence of toil
and horror.

This just HAPPENS to be the son of the city’s founder  Fredersen,  (Note the red rectangle on the right hand page)-  the  Crimson Giant?

The city founder lives in  a colossal skyscraper called - yes - the New Tower of Babel.   The Tower of Babel in this movie is modeled after Brueghels 1563 painting - my source work for the collaborative mail art book The Crimson Giant and the Tower of Babel.

In total contrast to the dystopian nature of Metropolis, Michael ends his work with a mixed media painting of a house set in the luxury of real earth.  Real green.
Thank you Michalis – a VERY thought provoking work.

Mail Art received 1 December 2010

I might not understand numerous written and spoken languages, but the power of images to communicate retains an elemental power. The reach from the center to touch others outside. The offer of the way up made by personal ladders. This work is truly wonderful. The inclusion of asemic writing, recognizable but unformed text and a found fragment add to its sound compositional structure. Thanks Michalis, I love it!

Awesome pieces Michaelis!  I really adore his style and the sexless figures meld so nicely into the Crimson GIant world- an inspired addition to the gang.  Cheryl- you are a gem for lighting crimson fires under all us artists!
