I had a few questions about this imagery, so I wanted to clarify...It was taken from a book on the history of the American Civil War, which ran from 1861-1865. The two young men in the picture are Andrew M. Chandler and his "faithful servant", Silas, from Clay County, Mississippi (the deep south). I was interested in the formality of the picture (common for newly conscripted soldiers), and for the contrast between the postures of the men as well as their facial expressions. I was struck by how young the two looked - they're perhaps 15 or so? But I was floored by the weight that must have been place upon Silas...The conflict I imagine roiling from within functions as a profound contrast to the formal posture of the image.
