An artistamp (a portmanteau of the words "artist" and "stamp") or artist's stamp refers to a postage stamp-like artform. It is similar to a Cinderella stamp in that it is not valid for postage, but it differs from a forgery or a bogus stamp in that (typically) the creator has no intent to fool any post office or collector of stamps. (However, depending on how the stamp is used, it may be difficult to distinguish artistamps from local post stamps.) The artistamp is intended to be a miniature artwork which can depict or commemorate any subject its creator chooses.

HilgArt you can buy pre-perforated stamp sheets from 100 proof press, the portland stamp company among other places. I don't know how much perforators cost. You might keep your eyes on any auctions involving postal equipment I suppose. There are videos up on youtube of how to perforate stamps with a sewing machine, but I've never tried it out(mainly because I don't have a sewing machine).

Quick question to the masses: by what means do you (if you do; I haven't yet, but would like to play...) perforate your artistamps? Where does one go to get a perforating machine and how much do they typically cost? Has anyone played with creating 'homemade' perforating machines (such as rows of pins mounted into a block of wood or the like) and how has that worked out for you? Does anyone use the one-pinhole-at-a-time method, or is that as onerous and dissatisfying as it sounds? Other workarounds or adapted tools folks have tried?  Thanks for your answers in advance!

Is an artistamp still an artistamp if it is only through the design phase and never makes it to paper?
