Mail-Art History

In this group I ask members to place links to sources (new and historic ones) for people who like to do research on the subject of mail-art.

I will moderate this group, so postings not related to the subject will be edited or deleted. There are plenty of places in other groups for that.

The concept of 'The Eternal Network' also has been related to the French fluxus artist Robert Filliou, who, according to wikipedia, believed that making art was 'part of a permanent, universal and endless process deeply embedded everyday life.'

By the way, the German wiki provides us with more information about this artist, and in the wiki 'the birthday of art', the Eternal Network" also is mentioned (see - and use an online translator if you happen to don't understand German - https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art%E2%80%99s_Birthday ).

The book 'Eternal Network, a Mail Art Anthology' by Chuck Welch (1995 University of Calgary Press) is interesting to read, too. The book is dedicated to the memory of Jean Brown (1911-1994, friend of mail art), and about her Chuck Welch writes a very kind note, of which I would quote: 'If envelopes are the flesh of mail art, then spirit would be content. And so, mail art never dies, it returns to sender.' And remembering her correspondence, Welch says: '(...) I realize that a gift of spirit never dies - it lives in the Eternal Network.'

That is a good question.

As I think people can define what is 'mail art' by/for themselves, I think also the definition of the 'Eternal Network' is up to anyone who wants to define it.

A web article about Japanese mail artists says:

"(...) “eternal network” of artists coming and going, was established and flourished in the post via correspondence, artist periodicals, zines, books using rubber stamps, visual poetry, and other means of artistic mediums marginalized by the mainstream."

To me, it means: the eternal network is the sum of mail artists, connections via mail (thus network), in the past, present and future (thus eternal).

The fact that some people in the past captured the term 'eternal network' does not mean that questioning is profanity. People who assault don't seem to be real networkers to me, but dogmatic people - while mail artis free of dogmatism, to my opinion.

What would you think the definition of the Eternal Network?

@res , May Wilson is the Mother of Bill Willson. He and his mother were close contacts of Ray Johnson. There are a lot of connections to discover in the network. It is a small world after all....

Dear Ruud,

in the past I have written many a text about art and mail art. Some of them one can find combined with my name in the internet too.

Entrance aid may be the link:

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henning_Mittendorf

Here one can find among other the link to my text „Signalismus: Das Verhältnis von Wissenschaft und Kunst“ (sorry, only in German; Signalism: the relationship between art and science) and additional links leading to some further texts of me - in English.

By the way, according to my very personal condensing experiences as to mail art I more and more do prefer that there is only a flowing presence and no history of mail art, but that there is a history of mail artists. The presence of mail art has been called by Robert Filliou „The Eternal Network“.

Very best greetings

HeMi
