Richard Canard's Post-Punk Trashpo Revival (Carbondale, Illinois, USA)

Richard - 7.20.2016 - 1

Mail art by IUOMA member Richard Canard (Carbondale, Illinois, USA)

July 20, 2016 - North Carolina networker Jon Foster initiated a punk revival in mail art circa 2010, which has had considerable impact in the contemporary realm. (Punk culture was a strong presence in the network in the 70s and 80s.) Now Richard Canard seems to be embracing the revival impulse with his own Punk-inspired pieces. The enigmatic Maria Morisot (Moan Lisa) has received a similar anti-art, cardboard piece from Richard. I thought I should document what I have received.

In this piece, Richard Canard associates Punk with Trashpo. I believe this is an astute observation. Indeed, Trashpo does have partial roots that can be traced back to Punk and Post-Punk networkers. Neil Gordon is one of only a very few artists who have made the connection between Punk and Trashpo. Now we have another.

I have no firm knowledge of the trends in Richard’s work during the Punk or Post-Punk Eras, Based on what I do know, I do not believe he embraced the aesthetic of the teenage zinesters who swelled the Punk waves that pummeled and tested the network. (Some very interesting characters central to the Punk movement made important contributions as well.) Perhaps, with time having created a safe distance, he at last finds it safe to experiment with a volatile form. I am certainly pleased to have received this unusual mail art.

I've learned through the grapevine that Lucky Pierre received one of these punk pieces too.

It's great! I thought it was inspired by "Punk Barbies" when I received mine.

Thank you, Maria Morisot. I agree with your comment: I have no inside knowledge about you. I am going by the names on envelopes.

I have been receiving m-a from Moan Lisa and Maria Morisot for a long time. So I look forward to new projects. But again, no, I don't know much about you.

Just wanted to share this RC material.

Re;"Maria Morisot (Moan Lisa)"

I may be who you think I am, but I am not who you think I am.

More to come soon.
