BREIF HISTORY ABOUT THE ART FACTORY

The old factory of 20 av. Giuseppe Motta has left his mark on the daily life of the Servette district for over a century. Rehabited by artists, artisans, actresses and cultural actors of various colors, it has obtained a new life as a self-managed place of creation and artistic mediation.

In 1920 , the SCSC underwent a major expansion and the space for its vehicles became insufficient. Architect Léon Belloni adds a large appendage to the rear of the 1910 building for cars; a small northeast part remains clear, called "the garden".In 1907 , the Swiss Cooperative Consumer Society ( SCSC, created in 1868, which became COOP ) bought the plot from the heirs of François Moget. These are three buildings ( 503, 503 bis and 503 ter ) used as a dairy and bakery. It is likely that the buildings were also used to accommodate transport and delivery vehicles.

In 1910 , the architect Edmond Fatio made a request on behalf of the SCSC to build "stables of shed". These are two long buildings, parallel to each other, arranged along the length of the plot. They had two levels, separated by a central alley and connected by a canopy at the level of the roof.

On the ground floor, in the north body, stalls with a small space reserved for the boy from the stable, with the oat depot and a room for tools; opposite, in the south body, sheds to tanks.

The upper level is probably reserved for hay, and for storing goods.

Only half of the building is completed, according to the architect's plans, it should be 50 meters in length, it is only 25. For a few years, the old buildings 503 and 503 bis are thus preserved. Heating is installed in the parts occupied by the horses.

In 1912 , a neo-XVIII house was built on the street front with housing and saddlery.

The whole is registered: stalls n ° 1776, tanks n ° 1775. )

In 1924 , transformations were carried out. The purpose of this work was probably to transform the stables into car garages.

Between 1929-30 , Léon Belloni signs the plans for a new extension.

In 1957 , an exchange of land took place between the city of Geneva and the SCSC.

In 1958 , the city of Geneva rented the back room to the Société des Compteurs Electriques (SODECO), a neighboring company.

In 1961, SODECO obtains the surface right. It carries out works including the raising of part of the building for deposits. The building is experiencing various damages.

In 1978 , SODECO redid some of the roofs and installed tinsmiths around the canopy and on the outlet hatch as well as concrete slabs under the canopy.

In 1985 , water damage was noted in a part built in 1961 by SODECO.

Abandoned for more than a decade, Geneva artists occupy the wasteland and set up workshops there as well as places for rehearsals, internships, workshops and meetings.

We thank Yann Joly and Joseph Frusciante for their tireless research.
