Asemic Readymades by Richard Canard (Carbondale, Illinois, USA)

Readymade asemic poetry by IUOMA member Richard Canard
(aka Richard C) (Carbondale, Illinois, USA)

May 22, 2019 - Richard Canard, a former member of Ray Johnson's New York Correspondence School, is generally considered one of the most influential mail artists working today and is certainly one of the most recognized. He has successfully navigated mail art's sometimes uneasy shotgun marriage to the digital realm without compromising his literary artistic roots.

Asemic Front readers and participants know Richard C has taken a special interest in asemic writing (which - like visual poetry - is popular in the Eternal Network). His "asemic readymades" appear from time to time and he is a previous contributor to the Asemic Front project.

Now that introductions have been made, I will revert to a chrono-linear documentation of Richard Canard's asemic readymades:

So here (below) is a full view of Richard C's asemic poems. They suggest to me tablets and a book. I have received Eco-Asemics and Trashpo asemics (Trashemics) among other marvels of the human imagination. This is the first time - as far as I can recall - that I have received Edible Asemics. (Although, kids, you know my unwavering advice: DO NOT EAT ANY MAIL ART YOU RECEIVE!)

Specifically, Richard's asemic poems are Matzos-emic. I can safely conclude the Matzos-emic has never been considered before in the global asemic writing community.

Take a moment for reading and contemplation. (Perhaps we should call it Contemplative Art rather than Conceptual):

Wow, great pieces from Sir Richard C! I especially like the North Dakota one. It is neat that asemic writing can be found almost anywhere. Thanks for opening up the archives, De Villo!

Mark, I am not Jewish. Most recently I've been Catholic.

I have to admit I was a little worried about posting this work because people are misreading everything related to religion these days. But I don't believe RC is making any religious reference other than the deep textual richness of the Jewish tradition.

IUOMA has always been open-minded in terms of artistic expression, you know.

Are you Jewish, DVS?

This is not Richard Canard's first asemic piece. A short walk down memory lane:

Thanks Nancy, Judith, Jayne, Carmela.

I haven't seen Litter Richard lately. I hope he didn't eat some of his own mail art.

They look a little bit like the back pages of very, very old books that lived in semi-humid conditions for centuries and were not opened in that time.  Those tend not to be even semi-regular, though.  And they must not taste good either! Very nice blog, DVS.

This is a warning to DVS. Do Not attempt  to eat those matzahs. Looks can be decieving. They look far better than they taste. Believe me .

Great post, DVS! And I agree with everything NBS said. Mister Richard C., you are amazing!

Edible Asemics, from the one and only Richard C. You lucky dog. There must be numerous hidden artists in the cracker-designing world. Grocery shopping will never be the same.
