Upcoming FE-mail event announcement (as sent to members of the mailing list, Feb 24th, updated with new date March 6th))

Hello,

I am writing to you because you filled out the recent survey to add your name to the mailing list for the upcoming FeMail mail art meet up! Thank you for responding! I'm so excited!! We've had around 10 responses so far, which I think is a perfect size to get started (though I expect that number will grow over time).

From the survey itself, Sunday during the day seems to be the day that works for the most people (including myself). I apologize to those who can't do Sundays but I had to go with the day that works for the most amount of people. As we go on, we may switch the days around as we see what works best, and as space is available in the WCCW.

In the meantime, please save the date for the kick-off event we're planning for March:

On March 22nd April 19th we plan to screen a copy of the documentary "Making Mail" to kick off the Femail project! There will be drinks and snacks and some tables set up for people to make some mail.

We may also have some people present their own mail art at the initial event (or at later meet-ups), if you are interested in submitting pictures of your work to show and/or speaking, please let me know ASAP.

This first event is for people who want to check out the documentary and learn a bit more about the types of mail people are sending, but also will serve as the first mail art collaboration.

After the initial event, we'll just do a monthly meet up, again, on Sundays.See the section below for details on the meet ups themselves, but the important thing to note for the meet up events is that you should come prepared with your own supplies.
More information will be posted on the WCCW newsletter, WCCW Facebook page, and of course, directly through this mailing list. Tell your friends who make mail to join!!  I don't have a landing page for the event yet, but My IUOMA page will be updated periodically with event information, and you can also sign up for the mailing list at: http://bit.ly/1A6c7ug

Please feel free to contact me directly at this email address if you have any questions about the upcoming meet ups, but below is the overview in detail.

FAQ FOR FUTURE FEMAIL MAIL ART MEET UPS AT THE WCCW (this is for events after the kick-off event on March 22nd April 19)

WHAT is this event: A monthly mail-art meet up for women mail artists to come together, make mail, share techniques and interests, and inspire each other. There will likely be some spin-off events such as movie screenings, talks, and/or workshops (as time and space allow).

WHEN is this event: Once a month, mostly on Sundays, time and exact dates to be determined.

WHERE is this event: At the Women's Center for Creative Work.
3352 N. San Fernando Road LA, CA 90065 (between Fletcher and Glendale directly behind FLOORGATE-- parking next door at Pep Boys) Final location TBD.

WHO is hosting this event: This event is being put together by Kim Gomez, a librarian and mail artist living in the LA area, and the WCCW. She is a new member to the WCCW and had decided that a mail-art event is the perfect way to get involved with this awesome group.

HOW will we be making mail: Individually or collaboratively, depending on your mood and projects. People who make mail work in a variety of types and formats (Correspondence art, postcard art, artistamps, digital art, embroidery, collage, mail kits, unusual objects to be mailed, etc.), so please bring your own supplies pertinent to what kind of mail YOU want to make at these events. There will be some basic tools provided too (glue sticks, pens, some collage raw materials, FEMAIL and WCCW rubber stamps), but in order to make sure we have what everyone wants, please bring your own basic supplies. People may also wish to trade supplies, so we can talk about supply swaps at the event (swaps of  postage stamps, artistamps, rubber stamps, papers, ephemera, etc).

If you are new to mail art and want a good book to get you started, I highly recommend Jennie Hinchcliff's book 'Good Mail Day' (see your Public Library or Local Bookstore) There is a great chapter in Good Mail Day about how to create travel mail kits, perfect for a kit to bring to the meet ups. If you are a first time mail maker and have questions, do not hesitate to contact me, Kim Gomez, at joancrawfordhotdog[at]gmail.com
