Some of you know I glean lots of collage supplies from the discards at a nearby auction house. I frequently stuff things in my bag just to look at them closely when I get home... better grab it now and discard later than lose it to another picker!

So last week I grabbed someone's school record book with photos, grade cards, etc. (the pockets attracted me as well as the old photos) and a hardcover baby care book that had some writing inside.
Got them home and discovered locks of hair in the big book, no, not baby locks, long curls... did some research on the name, and found that the girl didn't make it past high school, died in 1979.  Found her name mentioned in her mother's (recent) obituary. I'm guessing the family (local) cleaned out her mom's stuff and threw all this out.
So... I was thinking of making some ATCs or something similar from all this stuff, and sending them out to people on this site, but I don't want to creep anyone out. My idea is that this girl didn't really travel at all in her life, so I would sort of extend her memory by making art and mailing it out.
At the same time, having this stuff around is sort of weird, and if I don't use it for something, I'm not comfortable throwing it out, even though that's exactly what her family did.
Your thoughts are welcome....
Jeanne

I like the idea...but I think the hair should be set to the wind... It is so sad what ends up at auctions. I use to go to them but there was just too much personal stuff.

A wonderful idea.  Mail Art with a story attached, it doesn't get any better than that.  I think you're doing a beautiful thing here.  Count me in.   You can get my address from Minneapolis Gnome.

I like that idea about tossing it to the birds... thank you for the suggestion.

no hair for me either. Have your ever looked on line at "Hair jewelry" -- people used to make all kinds of stuff with hair from their dead. Ewww.

I think your idea of extending her memory & sending her 'spirit' out on travels through the mail is sweet & romantic but I agree with Jubula, that I wouldn't want to get hair in my mail (bleh! THAT would be creepy). Why not toss her locks out for the birds to use in their nest building this spring? include some bits of yarn or ribbon and they just love it... :)

Thanks, Jubula, that's the kind of feed back I want to hear. My idea also includes the receiver sending it on to wherever... I don't need anything back.
