<p>Hey mailart pals</p>
<p><br></br>I've been given a public space to display mailart at a new mail project that's opened in the very centre of London. The project is called <a href="http://www.blogger.com/welcometoreal.co.uk/plot/plot-45/" rel="nofollow">Welcome to Real</a>, and bills itself as <a href="http://myrealwall.com/" rel="nofollow">the first network</a> to be run by post. <p>Hey mailart pals</p>
<p><br/>I've been given a public space to display mailart at a new mail project that's opened in the very centre of London. Regular readers of <a href="http://myrealwall.com/" rel="nofollow">my REAL wall</a> may have a little something to say about that...<br/><br/>Anyway, the idea of this project, sponsored by Royal Mail, is that they have a public display space in a pretty prominent place in the centre of London and they are giving a number of lucky folk "plots", which are little pieces of space to display stuff that is to be sent in by post. I've been given plot 45 to display in and I shall be running my REAL wall at that address until the end of the show, which runs til the 27th July.<br/><br/></p>

<p><br/><br/>I shall be doing a retrospective/live performance of my REAL wall, showing all the awesome stuff I've been sent over the years. You of course can take part and fill up my plot too, just send all your mailart to me this month at my plot address, which is...<br/><br/>my REAL wall</p>

The personaltime and attention given to this craft based task may be seen as a reactionagainst the distance and virtual forms of communication increasingly usedthroughout the rest of the students' training and a recognition of the need toacknowledge and support each other in a more meaningful and tangible way.</p>

Mailart. It's changed my whole life. Since discovering it, nearly 2 years ago, I can honestly say that mailart has heavily changed my life. Whereas before I discovered mailart, I was a science and technology person with a passing interest in art, I can now say I am an artist. Mailart has done this.<div><div><br></br></div>

Mailart. It's changed my whole life. Since discovering it, nearly 2 years ago, I can honestly say that mailart has heavily changed my life. Whereas before I discovered mailart, I was a science and technology person with a passing interest in art, I can now say I am an artist. Mailart has done this.<div><div><br/></div>
<div>For me, art lessons at school were always a nightmare. I couldn't draw to save my life and I wasn't raised in an artistic family where images and sounds were valued. I could look at something and say it was quite nice, and I still do, but no more than that.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>When it came to critiquing or creating art, I could not do it. Throughout school I was hopeless at art and deemed by the teachers to be a non-starter. So I gave up on it and labelled myself a scientist. Heck, so much so I became a physics teacher!</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>When I found out about mailart, I decided to give it a go. Instead of having a cynical-eyed art teacher looking over my shoulder and creating works that were "just not good enough" suddenly I was creating works that were bringing a smile to peoples faces all over the world. They would show their appreciation by putting something cool back in the post to me and by posting on my blog. my REAL wall, along with IUOMA and you people out there made this happen.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>I found in the REAL world, that REAL people don't need perfect lines or subtle chiaroscuro or whatever the hell it was that my art teacher wanted me to do. They wanted pretty pictures in the morning made by another human being that expressed whatever I wanted to express at the time.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>This was my liberation.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>I still can't paint. I still can't draw. But I photograph and I rubber stamp and I do things on 6x4 inches that I wouldn't dare on a larger canvas. On top of all that, I put together all your works and stick them on my wall all the time, thus discovering installation art in my own way. It's not about books.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>So now that I've discussed mailart and me, let's get onto the big news for today.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>As some of you know, I work in a university in the education department. Today I was chatting to the Art education department and conversation strayed onto my REAL wall (as it temds to do when you talk to me these days). I explained how mailart had changed my life and the head of Art Education was fascinated.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>"I' HAVE to sign you up to talk to our trainee art teachers about mailart" she said, and we went on to discuss how we could use my experience of discovering art in the classroom.</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>Yes it does seem a little odd, a physics teacher teaching art teachers how to teach art, but perhaps also it makes perfect sense. So on the 12th October, I'm going to teach a session entitled "Mailart - art in the global dimension" to a group of art teachers, starting with a mailart show of pieces received and will encourage them to send out mailart. We then intend to encourage mailart exchange within the group while they are going through the course with a view to putting on a show at the end of the year!</div>
<div><br/></div>
<div>So this is a mailart call with a deadline to be received by 12th October in London. If you have been affected by mailart, please send a postcard to my REAL wall at the normal address,</div>
<div><br/></div>

<div>with any design at all and I will put these up in my inaugural mailart lecture and try to convince them to send you one back!</div>

<br />
Hey <a href="http://myrealwall.blogspot.com">my REAL wall</a> fans I have an urgent mailart/postcard petition call that I need a quick response for, and I need your help!<br />
<br />
As many of you know, recently I received a <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/andytgeezer/3965465892/">very strange demand letter</a> from the local council, who seem to think that <a href="http://myrealwall.blogspot.com">my REAL wall</a> is a <a href="http://myrealwall.blogspot.com/2009/10/my-real-wall-october-15-2009-royal-mail.html">business</a>, and have demanded that I send them some paperwork proving that I get my waste disposed of properly, or face a potential £5000 fine!<br />
<br />
On the advice of <a href="http://www.postmuse.com">Postmuse</a> and with the support of my REAL fans, I decided not to bother to answer them straight away, but decided instead to send the story on to my local paper, the <a href="http://www.hammersmithandkensingtontimes.co.uk/content/hktimes/news/story.aspx?brand=HKTOnline&category=news&tBrand=hktonline&tCategory=znews&itemid=WeED09%20Oct%202009%2017%3A10%3A19%3A103">Hammersmith and Kensington Times</a>, who sent around a photographer and put the story on page 3 of the <a href="http://andytgeezer.blogspot.com/2009/09/my-real-wall-in-local-news.html">print edition</a> and headline on their <a href="http://www.hammersmithandkensingtontimes.co.uk/content/hktimes/news/story.aspx?brand=HKTOnline&category=news&tBrand=hktonline&tCategory=znews&itemid=WeED09%20Oct%202009%2017%3A10%3A19%3A103">website</a>.<br />
<br />
Another local magazine, <a href="http://www.westsidemag.co.uk/">Westside magazine</a> caught a sniff of this story and sent me an email to send them more details and I got in touch with them. They emailed today to say that, instead of running it as the same story that HKtimes ran with, they wanted to print a ‘what’s happened since’ story in the news page of the December edition, and they asked me if I paid the fine.<br />
<br />
Of course I haven't paid the fine, I have no intention of doing so as I've done nothing wrong, but I've been planning to send the council an intricate mailart postcard as they have demanded that I send them "paperwork related to the business" and the "business" I run produces large amounts of pretty paper and cool postcards, so I thought it was the most appropriate thing.<br />
<br />
When I told the editor that this was my intention, she was delighted<br />
<br />
"Send the intricate postcard to us please and I’ll use it as an image for the December issue!"<br />
<br />
Sounds like a mailart call to me if I ever heard one!<br />
<br />
So the call is this. Write the coolest, funniest prettiest piece of mailart or send a postcard of support to my REAL wall at the usual address to arrive by November 15th (please allow time for the <a href="http://myrealwall.blogspot.com/2009/10/my-real-wall-october-15-2009-royal-mail.html">postal strikes</a>, so post early please), and I will put together a package for the council and send it on to them, via <a href="http://www.westsidemag.co.uk/">Westside Magazine</a>, who will print your mailart as my official letter to the council.<br />
<br />
Nothing horrible please, this isn't a nasty one, it's a friendly jab showing the ridiculousness of their demand, so please don't get mad, let's just get even! Grrrr!<br />
<br />
Hopefully we'll wind em up a bit and they'll fine me or something.<br />

<br />
If you send me your address or give me a shout on my wall or respond to this post, I will send you a photograph that I've printed out. Your mailart challenge is to modify it so it looks good enough to put on <a href="http://myREALwall.blogspot.com" target="_blank">my REAL wall</a> and send it back to me.<br />
<br />
That will save me a whole lot of photoshop.<br />

Mornin Mail-artists!<br />
<br />
It's just occurred to me that the price of international postcard stamps is going up by 10% in the UK from the 6th of April. Seeing as you can't get fixed worldwide postal rates, I'd have to add more stamps after this date to send abroad, so I came up with <a href="http://andytgeezer.blogspot.com/2009/03/you-are-all-second-class-bitches.html">a cunning plan</a>.<br />

<br />
If you want a postcard, hurry up and leave me your address BEFORE the 4th of April and I'll send you one. No strings attached (well I <i>might</i> stick on some artistic string but you know what I mean) although obviously a postcard back for <a href="http://www.myrealwall.com">www.myrealwall.com</a> would be great, but the main reason is to avoid the price hike and get a bargain, even if it does cost me money.<br />

<br />
The results have been really pleasing and I like the fact that it's not only my former facebook friends who have sent me things, but members of the wider world, after I put a few adverts out for post. It's been really cool receiving mail from strangers, like <a href="http://grthink.deviantart.com">Gareth</a>, which has gone on to inspire me to create more and more intricate presentations of the work on my site <a href="http://www.myrealwall.com">www.myrealwall.com</a> and <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/andytgeezer">www.flickr.com/photos/andytgeezer</a><br />
<br />
I like the idea that the wall is not just a receptacle for art, dependant on mail, but is itself a work of art. In addition, leaving facebook and adopting REAL wall ideas, I have really started to think beyond the constraints of that system and am nowo exploring the limits of REAL presentation.<br />
<br />
It's refreshing!
