MILAN AMONG THE TOP 5 DESTINATIONS TO VISIT THIS YEAR ACCORDING TO THE NYT: HERE’S WHY

It is one of the stars of the last year: Milan. The New York Times put it among the top 5 destinations that should not be missed in 2011. In the last year, despite the crisis, it was one of the few Italian cities that saw an increase in the number of tourists compared to the preceding year (+8%). Not only that it was the first XXI century metropolis that opened a new museum in the main square, the only one to have organised Fuori Salone events that involved the entire city and attracted international tourists, it is also the fashion, design and opera capital and home to the reigning football world cup champions. Finally it is the city of Expo 2015, where it will be in the world spotlight. For the first time Néo, e-Magazine (www.neoenews.com: free subscription), is dedicating an entire issue to the city of Milan. The special edition will be published on the 10th of May (the 16th of May for the international version).

A tribute to the city that this year has seen an upturn in growth by focusing on cultural chic tourism and its new cosmopolitan identity which has been redesigned by creativity and the young avant-garde. In the next issue of néo, therefore for those who want to know about the city’s new identity there is a mini-guide with the places not to be missed: from museums to the Scala Theatre, and from religious sites to Leonardesque itineraries. For those who on the other hand want to know more about the creative scene in Milan, from installations and fuori salone events the world famous archi-stars and artistic chefs. Finally there is The Expo 2015 in Milan dedicated to food quality and safety is intended to be a driving force for the economy of the area and represent the best in the food sector in Italy and Milan. To understand further what the Expo will mean for Milan we take a look back at the previous editions around the world.

A triumph of success that is also on the web. Milan has decided to focus on tourism 2.0, by making the city interactive and just a click away at any time of day. Nèo is also dedicating a special feature to the site www.tourism.milan.it which in just a year has grown from 200,000 to almost 2 million visitors.

After its success last year with over one thousand participants the "Milan Summer School” is preparing for its third edition. An unmissable study occasion to spend your free time in a fun, professional way.

From the 14th of June until the 9th of August in fact the Milan City Council is promoting special courses for both Italians and foreigners organised by the main schools and universities in the city. 12 different fields to choose from: fashion, design, theatre, music, cinema, art, Italian culture and language, handicrafts, tourism, international relations, medicine and surgery. 26 schools and universities involved offering more than 130 courses of various levels, 2 business games for those who are planning on launching their own business and 1 community for high school graduates, university graduates and new graduates from all over the world.

The Milan Summer School however does not only offer courses. For the students of the “summer edition” there are numerous events: the “Welcome party” every Monday to welcome the new arrivals and meet all the Community participants; weekly guided tours to the major city monuments and the artistic sights in the city such as Leonardo’s “Last Supper”, the Scala Theatre, the Pinacoteca di Brera- the Brera Art Gallery, Leonardo’s Atlantic Codex; concerts at San Siro stadium, unbeatable musical performances at the Scala Theatre such as opera, ballet, concerts and recitals and also live music around the city; happy hour and reduced price evening events in charming and fashionable places where you can enjoy music, theatre, art and sample a few of the local Milanese specialities.

The Milan City Council – explains Alessandro Morelli, Councillor for Tourism, Territorial Marketing and Identity – has always recognised the importance of knowledge, training and creativity. With the Milan Summer School, Milan wants to increase its appeals to young people especially in the summer. A cultural centre of attraction for young talent from all over the country and above all from abroad who, by staying in Milan can take advantage of the possibility of improving their knowledge in a culturally creative context”.

The only thing left to do then is to become a fan of the community at milanosummerschool.ning.com, to keep in contact, before, during and after the summer and find useful information at www.milanosummerschool.com, the new portal entirely dedicated to young people from all over the world who want to spend their summer holidays in Milan to discover the city and improve their skills.

The international magazine néo has dedicated a special feature to the Milan Summer School. A real mini-guide for the youth fun capitals with features on: musical festivals that are invading Europe; emerging artists and new art forms; a hit parade of the best loved quarters by European young people; the ESN Erasmus network and the trends of summer 2011.

In support of the meeting between the Lombardy city and World cultures, 60 Erasmus students studying in Milan will leave Milan for Berlin on the 9th of March aboard the Mailand Bus. Mailand trifft auf Berlin: for the first time a city will present itself to another by using foreign students who study there as “ambassadors”. On the 10th of March the Erasmus “ambassadors” studying in Milan will meet their international peers from some of the Berlin university associations in several places around the German capital.

The day will end with an event at the Frannz Club in Kulturbrauerei during which there will be the international showing of a 29 minute documentary about the Milan Fuori Bit, an extremely successful initiative which ended in February 2011. Shot by Erasmus students with a German presenter, the documentary covers the highlights of Fuori Bit, among which the evening of the Party Bus, which crossed the city of Milan in an atmosphere of internationalism and the Flash Mob at the Duomo in Milan in which a circle of ESN students, the Erasmus students association from the Milan universities physically “hugged” the city symbol. The Fuori Bit, an initiative by the Milan City Council in conjunction with the International Tourism Fair (Bit), involved all the main event organisers in the city and tourist boards from 21 nations. Through the slogan "Milan in the world, the world in Milan” the streets, squares and famous places in the city became the showcase for many world cultures for three evenings (from the 17th to the 19th of February 2011), among which South Africa, Serbia and Sweden. More than 100, 00 people (according to the daily newspaper the Corriere della Sera) participated in the event, transforming Milan into a lively, creative city creating quite a stir in the Italian and international media.

There are many initiatives by the Milan City Council for international creative talent that will be presented during the “Mailand, Mailand, wir fahren nach Mailand” tour and the evening-event at the Frannz Club in Berlin.

The IdeaMi fashion show: non professional models (students) will present the t-shirts designed by the winners of the “IdeaMI” creative competition that involved international students and young designers in representing the image of Milan. More than 1000 designers and international creative artists took part in the Ideami contest, organised entirely via the Internet, using and reinventing the Milan brand.

Fuori Bit and Fuori Art, the "fuori Salone" events have now become a must on the Milan entertainment scene: important occasions to give visibility to emerging talent in an innovative way. After the Fuori Bit experience, from the 7th to the 10th of April Milan will host MiArt, the contemporary art fair in parallel with Fuori Art: the same evening the squares and places in Milan will host performances by international artists. The main galleries and some of Milan’s bars and restaurants will “adopt” a young artist giving them the possibility to exhibit their work and be visible in the city via international media. At the same time the winning images of the “Milan special effects” competition, the best work by international graphic designers who reproduce the famous sights in Milan modified with graphic effects created by them. The official start of the Blog Contest, Milan special effects will take place right in Berlin.

As well as these initiatives there are others of interest to young people such as: Mito, the International Music Festival (September) and the LED, the International Light Festival (December).

The Milan Summer School: the summer event involving all the universities and schools in Milan aimed at those who want to mix studying and fun (www.milanosummerschool.it).

The choice of selecting young foreign students studying in the city to promote Milan is explained by Alessandro Morelli, the young councillor for Tourism, Territorial Marketing and Identity at the Milan City Council: “These initiatives are aimed at mixing fun and also knowledge of the city which knows how to offer modernity, fashion, and design as well as a thousand year old history that goes from its Celtic origins up until the present day through the Roman, Medieval and Renaissance eras. Deep roots in the Past yet always looking straight to the future. This is what Milan has to offer to those, like young people who want to live the experience of the most international city in Europe, looking to tomorrow with the door to the World always open”.

Milano and Berlin, will meet up on the 10th of March 2011 in a project aimed at creating a direct contact between producer and the public, by concentrating on artistic and creative production. Milan is banking on promoting the creative public that can bring about new forms of expression to make Milan a city that is able to epitomize the spirit of the time, both artistic and cultural, a signal of creative rebirth in Italy firmly looking towards the future. For this reason for the first time in world history a city has chosen to promote itself using Erasmus students, the best people to promote the city of Milan where they live to a young international audience.

Milan 3rd of December 2010 – A new museum in the main city square and a historical event as well. To celebrate Néo the international e-Magazine is dedicating a special issue in December to the Twentieth Century and in particular to the Twentieth Century museum that will be inaugurated in Milan on the 6th of December.

The museum’s aim is to investigate, explain and retell the story of the Twentieth Century in all its complex and fascinating aspects. The museum will open its doors in the historical surroundings of the Palazzo dell’Arengario: on show more than 400 works of art from the XX century to admire for free until February 2011.

Cultural works of art that embody the spirit of a time recently ended and which probe the Twentieth Century identity through specific themes: it starts with a section dedicated to the International Avant-garde with paintings by Picasso, Braque, Klee and Kandinsky, Laurens and Modigliani to then move on to the first room dedicated to Futurism. The route is indicated by monographic sections among which the one by Umberto Boccioni, with an unparalleled collection of unique works of art. Then onto the art of the Twenties and Thirties between the Twentieth Century and Abstractionism with monographs by de Chirico, Morandi, Martini and Melotti, while there is a large room in the dell’Arengario tower dedicated to the work of Lucio Fontana.

A dream invitation therefore to relive the original works in their context and to truly understand the sense of its style and taste. The spiral staircase inside the innovative structure designed by Italo Rota and Fabio Fornasari, gives the right sense of importance and ambition of this project: a functional element that links the different floors of the tower from the Underground level to the picturesque Duomo cathedral terrace and yet at the same time an artistic element that will make the Palazzo dell’Arengario universally recognisable. A complex and well structured route studied by a high level scientific committee which was created ad hoc for the Milanese location headed by the Central Cultural Director Massimo Accarisi and the Museum Sector Director of the Milan City Council Claudio Salsi, coordinated by Marina Pugliese, Director of the Twentieth Century Museum Project.

The exhibition space provides the visitors with an emotional experience as well as a historical one as they move through space and time. Not just a container to preserve the works of art but a trip that can involve the visitor in a unique experience that has become a tangible sign of a city that has renewed itself in the memory of its past, as the Mayor of Milan Letizia Moratti declared: “To spread the knowledge of Twentieth Century art and make it possible to see the best and most extensive collections that Milan has inherited over the year: these are the objectives of the project designed by Italo Rota and Fabio Fornasari to reinforce the identity of Milan and increase its international prestige”.

There is also an interesting journey of the Twentieth Century man in Nèo, through cult films from every decade; a comment by Gillo Dorfles on Twentieth century paintings; the XX Century charts with music records from the century of the hit parade; without forgetting the literature and architecture that embody the atmosphere of the time.

Also in the issue of Néo the official winners of the IdeaMi contest for international artists will be published.

For information on the museum: www.tourism.milan.it
For information on: www.neoenews.com (subscription free)

Néo Press Office
www.neoenews.comA virtual tour of creativity with Nèotag:iuoma-network.ning.com,2010-11-19:2496677:BlogPost:1953132010-11-19T12:26:28.000ZKatia Fernandeshttps://iuoma-network.ning.com/profile/KatiaFernandes
