I think they can also be an original and do not have to be printed. Some peole sell their zines others say "real" zines should not be commercialised.

Hi Carol, the IUOMA site can be confusing at first but as you navigate around it, it becomes easier to understand. Just have a play. In terms of making mail art, there are call outs for contributions to exhibitions, zines etc, groups who like to create and share art on single themes, and individuals who like sending work to each other. Plus there are many other variations!
Mail Art has a rich history. It's worth reading a bit about Ray Johnson, who was in many ways the founder of this genre: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Johnson
