Critical Mail Art & Image Text Collage exhibition + catalogue

Critical Mail Art & Image Text Collage exhibition + catalogue

In cooperation with the Mail Art Archive Vienna, curated by Kevin Geronimo Brandtner

This exhibition in three of the display cases in the camera museum is the result of an international Mail Art call on the occasion of the exhibition Padhi Frieberger – Photo Art 1950-2000.In the period from March 15th to June the 15th 2021, 122 artists from 26 countries submitted over 170 works by mail.

For artists worldwide, mail art is an opportunity to create non-commercial art that avoids the established channels of presentation and marketing. Unique pieces are collaged from photocopies, newspaper clips and selected stamps and sent by post to a worldwide network.

Mail art has been used as a social and political medium since its beginnings in the 1950s by artists like Ray Johnson in New ork and Padhi Frieberger in Austria. In the dictatorship of Latin America and Eastern Europe, the semi-public nature of mail art was also a means of resistance.

Even in the digital age, mail art is not sent by e-mail. The mostly small-format art is still very popular and remains an analogue medium. In the Mail Art Archive Vienna, mail art is collected and presented in the form of magazines.
