The Mail Art Experiment

Information

The Mail Art Experiment

I just unearthed a stack of fantastic pages of handwritten experiments.  Inspired by my love of ledger art and the many talented artist who participated in the Philpott Lake Project (philpottlakeproject.tumblr.com), I am sending out a new mail art call!

So, here is the deal; I will send you a sheet of “the experiment” to alter and send back to me.  I will then scan the pieces and post them to themailartexperiment.tumblr.com.  I hope to also open a physical exhibit in Virginia in the Fall 2018.

I would like to present the mail art in a clean and cohesive manner, so I have a few more rules than last time. I will only be scanning and displaying the pages themselves. I do not plan to post envelopes or any additional pieces of art.  If there is any information that you would like to include (name, date, location, title) please incorporate it into the piece.  I would prefer that the pages remain unfolded, in portrait format and unaltered in size.

Enough rules!  There will be NO RESTRICTIONS on theme, content or medium, just keep in mind that your art may be displayed in a public place.

If you are interested in participating in The Experiment, please join the group and message me your address.  I will send you a page ASAP until I run out.  I have roughly 70 pages, so invite your friends!  This time around, I hope to produce a Thank You mailing early on in the game, so once I receive something from you, be on the lookout for something from me.

Thank you!  I look forward to seeing you in the mail.

Thanks, stripygoose!  I mailed the international invitations last Friday and I will be mailing the U.S. cards on Saturday.  Everyone should hopefully have one next week.

Diana---thanks for your dedication to this project and for finding an exhibit space. The library is a beautiful and appropriate venue to share the creative pages. Did my 'my art experiment' book make it to you?

First of all, I want to say thank you again for the art, I love each and every piece.  And thank you for your patience with me when I was sometimes EXTREMELY slow to post.  I went through two job changes and two moves over the course of this project and sometimes life just got in the way.
WE HAVE A SHOW!  I contacted the Crozet Library across the street from the post office on Monday and they were extremely enthusiastic.  The librarian had seen the Philpott Lake Project at PVCC and wanted to do whatever she could to bring the Mail Art Experiment to the library.  Their normal exhibit space isn't available for more than a year, but she offered to install panels at the main entrance so that we could get a show up this August.  I met with her last night to look at the space and the placement is great, loads of smart and curious people come through, and the exhibit will stay up for a full six weeks (August 21st to October 2nd).  I know it isn't a gallery space, but I think it is the best way to keep it local to the town of Crozet and get the widest and best possible audience.

You can take a virtual tour of the library here:

We will have three panels at the main entrance where the two small round tables are now.
I am very excited, I hope you are too.  It is going to look great.
