Mail Art Archives

Some Mail-Artists have been doing Mail-Art for a longer time and have saved all they get in, documented what they sent out, collected books, magazines and documentations, and before they knew it were the owner of a Mail Art Archive. Tell us more...

Do you have a mail-art archive?

If you have a mail-art archive.please tell a bit about what is in it, how you store it, from which dates the materials are, and if possible show a photo.Continue

I've got an archive dating back about 35 years. It's mostly in a pirates treasure chest. My grandparents send me cards and invitations for sleep overs, including lists of stuff to bring, images I liked at the time and decorated with stickers. When I was around 10, I played mail box with several friends and did mail art with my neighbor. I kept it in different boxes and tins. In middle school I played chatbox on paper where everyone could write only one line at a time and pass it on. I faxed for fun and had a little group of pen pals. We would swap in school and read it at home. I had one person, we shared a locker, and it contained a book where we would leave notes for each other. Then around 2000 I used email as a free form letter exchange. I have some print outs in a binder. For years I did letter writing, happy mail and snail mail with some creative people from the internet, but mostly with my mom. She is super creative as well and we have send each other a lot over the years. :) Of course I've kept it all. A while ago I searched for mail art when I stumbled into Nick Bantock's art. The word combination Mail Art was appealing to me and I finally found a fitting search term! Soon after that, I found IUOMA and then things spiraled quickly and amazingly absurdly. I started my own Archive of xeroxables and ephemera to use in Mail Art. And now we are here. I feel at home, finally connected to my community. I am keeping every bit I received (except for the Add&Pass). I am thinking about a blog or vlog, but for now it's analogue pure, sitting on my desk and in boxes and rows of envelopes in my bookcase. It inspires me to see them. Pictures: later.

One of the rubber stamp sheets we were working on. This one I did at home as the others were left on the stamping table!   Doh!
