Who will you send  your first piece of mail to? I've been thinking about this a lot. Will it be someone in this group? Will it be one of the many mail artists I've exchanged MA with over the years? Will it be one of my letter writing friends, or my…Continue

Significant dates for the diary (some might say...) 41 Replies

McFloozy mentioned Quack Day in February and I had a message from Valentine Mark Hermann telling me of an anniversary in February. I figured that it would be best to put all the dates in one discussion, so anyone could contribute and we could all…Continue

I was organizing my supplies, came across my stack of commercial postcards, and I thought that I might do a series of altered cards at some point in the year. Using photos for another series might be good, too, as I have lots of them from the days of film (I'm all digital now and do not print them out.) This is good to give each other ideas. I was looking through the 365 Daily Journal (my son's book) and got some ideas I might try. I've posted on Facebook and my blog that I'm doing this project. Noah says it's good to let people know. I guess that means: commitment!

HI Valentine - I guess I haven't made it too clear yet.

The parameters are really simple - From December 1st, you need to make and send a piece of mailart a day for a year.

Same rules of mailart apply as always, i.e. there are no rules. You can make whatever you like, and send it to whoever you like, even auto-posting as you've mentioned.

Of course, no-one expects that you send one every single day and post up every day religiously, and there are no penalties or mailart police waiting in the wings. It's a celebration of mailart not a homework class, so as long as you try and average 1 a day, then most people will be happy.

What you're doing with envelope a day is already a mailart 365 would count as a project for mailart 365 too. It's art, it goes through the mail and you make 1 a day!

Please can you clarify, andyt, EXACTLY what the parameters of this are? A postcard a day? For a year, To whom? On what? etc

Thanks!

That's a lovely stack - good idea to start getting ready, as we kick off in about 10 days. I'm tempted to try and do a theme a month. I was thinking collage in the first month, photography in month 2, replying to mailart calls in month 3. Not sure I will have the discipline to keep up a month by month theme though

This stack contains 71 postcard blanks. I just finished cutting them up from old boards, cereal cartons, etc. I refuse to be "daunted."

About a theme. I may see a theme emerge as I move forward with this project. I may start out simply and become more complex or vice versa. It'll be interesting to see what happens with my own work.

My son, the 365 creative journal guy, agrees.

Yikes! I love the idea that people are seriously considering sending me 100 pieces of mailart! My heart is jumping and down!

I think the same rules of mailart sending apply whether you are part of this project or not i.e. If a piece of mailart is sent, it's up the fates to decide if it gets there.

Mailart is more then just sending and receiving the works, but about the connection you make with the work as you create it, then the connection you hope that work has with someone else. A 365 purely means that you hope to get 365 pieces sent in a year. It's a statement of intent, and even with the best intentions you might still only manage 200. But it will be great having loads of people trying along with me!

Mark, I think you're thinking too much. I feel like the point is just to make a piece of art everyday for a year. It doesn't matter who you mail them to, We don't need 365 different address'. I might just send Andy 100 pieces. I also don't think that it needs to be seperate from the work you're already doing. My plan is to just keep doing what I already do with a bit more frequency. If only 318 of your envelopes make it to their destination, it doesn't matter, what matters is that you stoked the creative flame for 365 days!!
