BORING POSTCARDS

This Group celebtrates Boring, ordinary, dull, commercial Postcards that feature aspects of our everyday life – such as streets, roads, houses -- and are, in a strange way, interesting because they are so uninteresting. Join in and share your Postcards of our Boring world.

TWO FROM VAL

1. Untitled Postcard from Ellen Ter Beek, Rotterdam (the Netherlands)

It looks like the mess that our hound (Do Ghi) brings in from one of his Iwalks

2. 'the scratch', by erik bakker, Maastricht (the Netherlands

Go on, eric, scratch it. Perhaps it is a scratch and sniff card, unlike Katerina's Lalique bottle

SOME MORE FROM KATERINA -- THANKS, ONCE AGAIN

1. Red Moon over Thessaloniki

Katerina lives in Thessaloniki, but I can't seem to find her house (Glinou 29, Harkaou) here.

2. Panoralmc view of the Alps from Bad Worishofen-Hartenthal (Germany)

This was sent to Katerina from the German Mail Artist Dadanautik in 2018, and sent to Val from Katerina in 2020

3. Lalique Perfume Bottle

A Boring Postcard from Lalique Parfums' 2011 Limited Edition (I'm not sure what is 'limited' -- the Postcard, the perfume bottle, or both). Katerina asks "Who would send a Postcard of a lovely scented aroma? The card does not smell!"

Is this the start of a new sub-category -- Non-Smelly Boring Postcards?

BEARS FROM JENNIFER WALLACE, AND KANGAROOS FROM MONTY PYTHON

Thanks Jennifer (do look at the Monty Python clip!)

Bears Cave, Bihar County, Romania.

Jennifer says that she can't see any bears.

Look closely, and you will find three hidden behind the kangaroo.

"What kangaroo?", you may well ask.

Which brings me nicely to one of the funniest comic sketch I have seen for years and years -- and it's about art, too.

You can find the sketch on Youtube -- search for Monty Python's 'Why Michelangelo didn't paint the Last Supper', and follow the exchange between John Clease's Pope and Eric Idle's Michelangelo.

It explains the kangaroo.

"I may not know much about art, but I know what I like."

I'll try again Mary J;

First way to about things: look at the 'New to IUOMA' section, 3rd from the left, at the top at the IUOMA introductory page, and follow the advice there.

Second way to about things: get hold of a Boring Postcard. Send it to someone in IUOMA -- perhaps one of the other 57 members in this Group, or, indeed, one of the other 5,272 IUOMA members (not all of whom are active, or even alive) -- with a message on it saying that you hope they will send you something (it might not be a Boring Postcard, but some other sort of Mail Art) back.  Put a stamp on your card. Post it. Then hope you get something back. Repeat as often as you like.

I hope this helps.  Regards, Val

Hello Jennifer!

Or shall I call you Jen? Or Jenny?

Do you know the Paul Simon song, 'You can call me Al'?

Some of the lyrics go:

"If you'll be my bodyguard
I can be your long lost pal
I can call you Betty
And Betty, when you call me, you can call me Al"

So, you can call me 'Val' (which i prefer) or 'Valentine', or even 'Al'.

And, if you like, I'll call you 'Betty'.

Now as to the Postal History Boutique -- I hadn't realised it had gone into hibernation. Angie and Snooky seem to have left IUOMA, and that is probably why the Group is no more.

You could re-start it, perhaps....

Hi Heleen!

Bray is inspirational. As is Mr Tingey.

Thanks for the van Gogh link. His illustrated enevlopes are new to me, and interesting.

I'm not able to add to my Boring postcard collection these days, as all the vide greniers, vlooienmarkten, collector's fares etc have been postponed indefinetly here in France.

But when they re-open, I hope to find lots more...

Welcome to the Group, Mary J!

How to get started? Go to the very last page (no 27) of the Group, and read the very first piece I posted when I set up the Group. Then look at pages 22-6 to see how it all developed. If you have time, look at the other pages to see how the Group has evolved.

This will give you some idea of how you (and we) define the boringness of a Postcard. (Warning: it's subjective)

My original idea was to collect Boring Postcards from the IUOMA gang, add them to my own collection, and then exhibit a selection of them this summer in 2 exhibitions -- one in the North of Holland, the other in the South of France.

Sadly, both exhibitions were cancelled because of the virus, but I hope that they can be re-scheduled...perhaps in 2021.

In the meantime, the Gang keep sending me Boring Postcards for (and I have just made this up) "The Definitive IUOMA Boring Postcard Collection". If you have any, please send them to me, and I'll add them to the Collection.

And/or send them to other members of the Group, and see what you get back.

Good luck!

I'm ready to mail and receive boring postcards; will someone just tell me how to get started?  Thanks
