Hey, Pam - Check out Bonniediva's discussion "What do I do with Add/Passes" in the Start Here at IUOMA group, if you like. There is a list of mail art mentors in that group, as well, should you want one. xo

Thanks, Heide.  Well, considering the lack of real direction, I think I'm going to "hijack" this pile of paper. I'll add my bits to it, and then staple/bind into a booklet. Make copies to send to the few people who have included their address in it, and then send it on to another random person to continue the add and pass process. I don't see the eco-ethical sense in continuing to photocopy multiples, so will encourage the "arting" of the one booklet and ask that it be returned to me when all filled in. There is no other instruction as to who is to get this when completed, so I'm just going to go with what feels right.

I'm no expert, but here is my experience: many people use rubber stamps, or affix a small something.  Sometimes there is a theme, sometimes its really vague.  (sort of like this explanation)  Mail art has no rules (except it doesn't mix with money)  If you want to do a small sketch fine, if you have a favorite stamp fine.  Maybe someone who has more experience can weigh in.

Thanks Heide!! Do I add original art to each (most look photocopied?) And where do they all eventually end up? It's all a bit of a mystery to me??

You add your own bit of art on each, and then pass them on to someone else. There are a couple of add&pass groups here: you can find people that might like to receive these from you. Take a look at each and see if there is a theme going.
Alternately, you can pass them on the way they came to you.
