Thank you, Michael, for describing your binding techniques and various ways of keeping zines together. I appreciate it! I like the idea of sewing a cloth bag. That could be interesting. Being able to bind and not cover writing or art falling in the left margin is a problem for many of the items I want to bind. For example, postcards, 4x4 art cards, etc. When you bound with stitches, which binding did you use? I can't think of the name now...but I know there is a binding style that might be good for these kinds of art. Thanks again!

The next assembling 'zine I did with folded pages (A5) Card cover. 1990's

Terry - If I remember rightly, the blue tape was just cheap electrical tape I used to cover up the staples used to hold the pages together - not ideal!  If there is not much of a gap on the binding side it can be difficult to read some of the pages if they have writing on. I usually left them unbound but tried to experiment a bit with overall look of the 'zine - having cloth bags made in one instance, cellophane bags, stitched binding etc.  On my next 'zine I asked for a folded sheet which made my job a lot easier as I could staple and there would be not need to try and cover it up with tape.

Michael, thanks for sharing your zines. They are wonderful! I'm curious about the blue tape-like material on the left side of issue #13. Is this a binding and, if so, what is the binding name? Are the loose pages bound together? I have many projects with separate pages that I'd love to bind but I don't know which is the best way to do it. Thank you!

William - yes, an open call - no theme.  12 pages A5 folded to make 4 sides. The ones I compiled were mostly stapled but some issues were loose in paper, cloth and plastic bags.

Bric-A-Brac was an assembling 'zine from the 90's. I did the first 20 issues and then passed the editorship to Patricia Collins and she did a few issues and then passed it to Joe Decie who did a few more issues and so on.
