Mail art by IUOMA member Jayne B. Lyons (Lakeville, Minnesota, USA)

March 19, 2019 - Mail art is highly praised for offering its participants a “level playing field” with equal access. Networkers are thrilled to find a receptive audience, collaborators and mutual support from like-minded friends. The notion of the artist working in obscurity and isolation is shattered in the mail art community. My view is that mail art has actually delivered on these utopian-seeming promises for a long time. I hope this unique community can endure as we experience rapid change around the globe.

Yet mail art breeds its own “stars,” “overnight sensations” and “popular girls” (as the great poet Tom Clark called them). This is simply human nature. Something essentially human would be lacking in the Eternal Network were we not to have our own heroes.

Through blogging, I have become particularly aware of new talents, personalities and just interesting folks emerging in the Eternal Network. I note trends in work that finds its way to my humble mailbag. I remark on both innovations and traditions. Due to time spent on the “long dusty trail” I talk about the “historic figures” still among us and those who – as the DKulters say – “walk with Ray in the Great Landfill.” After all, this is the Eternal Network so I try to stay in touch with those only a boat ride away.

This is turning into a Sinclair Scripa style rant for one postcard. My point is, Jayne B. Lyons is certainly a “Popular Girl” in the mail art world these. She has been named a Legend of Trashpo, she has wowed the Lords of Vispo & Asemics with her compositions and she is a fave among many of the “newbies” swelling the ranks of IUOMA.

So here is a very nice card from Jayne B. Lyons that is neither Trashpo nor asemic fireworks, just engaging mail art that is both literary and rooted in folk art – a definite trend in contemporary mail art. Deepest thanks to Jayne B. Lyons!

LOL!! I like the kulter abduction case angle. Shall I present myself as a current brainwashed individual, or a recent deprogrammed person?? Yes, the section on you would certainly be LONG! As far as me writing about how kind you've been and what a great person you are..that depends on whether or not I am currently brainwashed or not! Haha!! Tell-all, schmell-all!!

idk know, Jaine. You are being hard on yourself. Didn't you write a reflection on your first year in m-a? Let's go back to that.

The "faking it" theme has potential. Maybe you could expand on that.

Otherwise maybe you disclose all the lurid gossip you've picked up on kulters and iuomans. Deflect your own shortcomings by exposing these people you've met for the beasts they are.

You might want to sell yourself as more of a kulter abduction case.

I can help you on the really long section on me as your mentor and how they took dkultny away from me and they mock me. You'll want to talk more about how kind I've been and what a great person i am.

I think you're on the right track but have a lot more work to do.

I’ll get working on it, DVS. What shall I call it? Perhaps ALL FOR FAME: FAKING IT IN THE ETERNAL NETWORK. Or A YEAR OF COPYING AND RIDING ON THE COATTAILS OF OTHERS: THE JBL STORY.

Just documenting, Jayne. Just the facts.

I realized you're also a spokesmodel (along with Diane) for Asemic Front 2. You're going to have to write a tell-all about your FAB & phenom first year in mail art. We haven't had any juicy behind-the-scene tales since Stubbs' Splattered: My Life on the Road with DK.
